Ann Kovacevich Ostrander, 84, of Cape Charles, Virginia, passed away peacefully in her home with her family by her side in the early morning of December 23, 2023.

She was born in Freedom, PA, in 1939 to Sofija and Michael Kovacevich. She married Walter Ostrander in September 1963 at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Ann and Walt settled in Dale City, VA, in 1970, where they raised three children.

Deputies were called to White Oak Road, near the Virginia Virginia Department of Transportation Residency, just after midnight Saturday, December 30, 2023, to find a man suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency crews took the unidentified 33-year-old victim of King George to a hospital, where he died. Police have still not released his name.

I spent the first week of the New Year laying to rest my grandmother, who lived to be 87 years old. Joyce McNeal, of Bluefield, W.Va., passed just before Christmas, leaving behind a small family, including two grandsons who fondly remember summers in the West Virginia mountains and small-town hospitality.

I got to experience some of that small-town hospitality when I visited Bluefield this week when I stayed at the Baker’s Hill Inn, a 110-year-old home turned into a bed and breakfast by Lisa Sydnor. It was my first stay at a bed and breakfast.

When Michael Smith dug into the box of chicken he had bought at Popeye’s Chicken on Route 234 in Dumfries, he found a fried piece of “something” and felt it required a closer look before he bit into it.

“I sent it to their general manager so they could see what’s going on; she never got back to me,” he said. This didn’t sit well with him.
