Helen Zurita, a longtime Manassas resident and community organizer, announced her candidacy Monday for one of three open seats on the Manassas City Council.

Zurita, who works as a community liaison for the nonprofit Creating Foundations for Hope, which supports hunger relief efforts, said her campaign focuses on practical leadership that puts working families and neighborhoods first. She emphasized protecting the city’s character while encouraging responsible growth, strengthening trust between residents and local government, and ensuring every part of the community feels heard.

“Virginia officials have indicated intent to rejoin the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative cap-and-trade program, with the Legislature recently passing legislation to solidify this action,” the American Legislative Exchange Council stated in its Energy Affordability 2026 report. “Mandate-driven energy requirements like the ones imposed by RGGI can place pressure on long-term electricity costs upward, even in states with diverse generation portfolios.”

Central Rappahannock Regional Library has been awarded a $6,000 grant from The Robert Cullen O’Neill Memorial Fund of The Community Foundation to purchase book prizes for its popular youth Summer Reading program.

The grant will fund complimentary books for children and teens who reach the 1,000- and 2,000-minute reading milestones. In 2025, participants earned an impressive 2,167 books through the program. Library officials emphasized that the Summer Reading initiative was not dependent on this single gift; additional prize support comes from local businesses Habit Burger and Raising Cane’s.
