Prince William Committee of 100 to address Human Trafficking in the community

Bel O’Neill, president of the committee, said the committee’s decision to focus on human trafficking coincided with National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. While initially unaware of the national event, the alignment added importance to the local initiative, she added.

A panel comprising experts such as Wesley Dawson, director of the office of community safety in Prince William County, Detective Abigail McLaughlin, with Prince William police special victims unit, and representatives from ACTS and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of human trafficking.

Strider named Chief Nursing Officer at region’s UVA medical centers

UVA Health Prince William Medical Center: “Michelle Strider, RN, BSN, MBA, CPHQ, has been named Chief Nursing Officer of UVA Community Health. Michelle has served as interim Chief Nursing Officer since July 2023, after the unexpected passing of previous Chief Nursing Officer, Barbara Hocking.”

“As Chief Nursing Officer of UVA Community Health, Strider will lead clinical strategy for nursing operations across UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center, UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center, and UVA Health Prince William Medical Center. She will be accountable for the delivery of high quality, safe patient care, consistent with the UVA Health mission, vision, values, and the UVA Health 10-year strategic plan and will support the hospitals’ interdisciplinary teams and operations throughout Culpeper and Northern Virginia.”

Call to Action: Prince William Area Continuum of Care needs donations

Greetings, Prince William – The Prince William Area Continuum of Care needs donations of $10 gift cards for the Point in Time Count (PIT) taking place January 24. PIT is a literal count of persons experiencing homelessness that occurs in January and is a requirement for agencies receiving federal funding for programs serving homeless persons. Gift cards allow surveyors to say “thank you” to people for providing their time to be surveyed and ensures they have a hot meal soon. While Dollar Tree gift cards are preferred, gift cards from Burger King, McDonalds, Subway and Taco Bell are also welcome. Gift cards should be delivered by January 23 during the day. VRE budget approved; Saturday service, fare increase

Virginia Railway Express: “The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) fiscal year (FY) 2025 budget received final approval Thursday evening, as the second of its two parent commissions voted to adopt the budget and accompanying six-year capital improvement program (CIP).”

“VRE’s FY 2025 operating budget totals $119.9 million, which includes operations, maintenance, and existing debt service. This is an increase of $11.0 million or 10 percent over the FY 2024 operating budget. The budget includes increases to fares of 5 percent and jurisdictional contributions of 14 percent. Both take effect July 1. VRE’s last broad-based fare increase was 3 percent in FY 2020.”

OmniRide holds ‘Extended Season of Giving Food Drive’

OmniRide: “OmniRide will hold an Extended Season of Giving Food Drive January 16 – January 19 in an effort to be a good partner in service to the community. In addition to accepting non-perishable donations on the buses, the organization will be accepting non-perishables in-person at several local government locations, and monetary donations online at the organization’s website.”

“The food drive will help to replenish shelves at local food pantries – one on each side of Prince William County. ACTS is on the east end of the county in Dumfries, and in addition to providing food assistance, offers utility assistance, programs to address domestic and sexual abuse, suicide prevention, and more. SERVE is in Manassas and provides food, shelter, utility assistance, services in foster care and adoption, health and dental services, mental health services, and more.”
