Drunken man drops gun on floor, police said

Stafford County Sheriff’s Office: Two firearms were seized from a 19-year-old after an observant citizen noticed him fumbling a firearm in an intoxicated state.

On May 12th at 4:34 a.m. Sergeant J.D. Hurt and Deputy J.R. Suarez responded to Wawa, located at 275 Butler Road, for an intoxicated person. The caller advised the male, who was stumbling around, dropped his firearm on the floor while inside the business. They further advised the suspect attempted to buy tobacco without an ID. When staff refused to sell him the product, he asked to buy controlled substances from them.

Stafford to Provide Update on Water Reuse System Project with Amazon Data Center

The Stafford County Utilities Department will provide the Board of Supervisors with an update on the county’s water reuse system project at a special work session on Wednesday, May 15, at 6 p.m. The project is linked to the construction of an Amazon data center on Old Potomac Church Road, near Stafford Hospital, part of the Potomac Church Tech Center zoning amendment.

Amazon Data Services (AWS) agreed to construct a reclaimed water facility at the Aquia Wastewater Treatment Plant. This facility will support the cooling needs of data centers in areas north of Centreport Parkway. AWS has committed to limiting the occupancy of the second building at the data center until the reuse system is operational, with a scheduled delivery date in the second quarter of 2027. The first building will use potable water until the reuse system is complete.

Forest Park High School’s special education students, affectionately known as the ‘A’ Street Bruins, recently enjoyed a memorable evening at their annual prom, organized by Special Education teacher Ashley Tayon. The event, held on Saturday, May 11, was a celebration of the students’ achievements throughout the year, complete with music, dancing, and delicious food.

Ashley Tayon, who leads the ‘A’ Street Bruins, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to showcase her students’ accomplishments. “Each year, we come together for a night of recognition and fun,” she said. “It’s a chance for our students to dress up and enjoy themselves in a glamorous setting.”

Mayor Earnie Porta expressed gratitude, stating, “Thanks to the efforts of the Congresswoman and her staff, the town now is the recipient of almost a million dollars in funding that is going to enable us to be able to do the remediation and improvements on our stormwater system that, again, we simply could not have done ourselves.”

The nearly one million dollars allocated will be utilized to address various critical needs related to stormwater management. Porta outlined the intended use of the funds, stating that they will enable the town to undertake “the remediation and improvements on our stormwater system” that are essential for the community’s well-being and safety.

Mom’s Boutique Gets a Makeover

In an effort to create a welcoming environment for mothers, the Virginia Women’s and Family Support Center Mom’s Boutique, located at 14019 Glenkirk Road in Gainesville, underwent a transformation with the support of Keller Williams’ RED Day of Service on May 9. According to an email sent to Potomac Local from an organization spokeswoman, the Mom’s Boutique will allow women to relax and feel at ease while shopping for essentials for themselves and their children.

The organization provides diapers, wipes, gently used or new clothing items, including onesies and pajamas, and a variety of hygiene products like baby soap, shampoo, lotion, and diaper rash cream. It also provides feeding supplies like bottles and sippy cups and, depending on donations, baby gear such as strollers, car seats, and high chairs.

Significant Street Closures Expected for Marine Corps Historic Half

Anticipating a turnout of over 4,300 runners, the event is set to commence at 6 a.m., with the final participant expected to cross the finish line by 10 a.m. Residents and commuters should prepare for significant road closures and potential delays between 3 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The Inaugural Prince William County Public Schools Sports Fair is set to take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering a showcase of athletic opportunities within the public school system.

“All VHSL sports will be featured at the PWCS Sports Fair,” said school division spokeswoman Megan Silas. “This includes cheerleading, cross country, golf, field hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, baseball, crew, lacrosse, softball, soccer, tennis, and track.”
