Vindman faces crowded field in 7th District race

U.S. Rep. Eugene Vindman, D-Woodbridge, faces five challengers on the ballot, including Republican Douglas Ollivant, as he seeks a second term in the 7th Congressional District, the Virginia Mercury reports.

The district includes Prince William County and parts of Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, and the Mercury reports that rising living and housing costs, federal employment shifts and infrastructure needs are top concerns for voters. Vindman won the seat in 2024 by three points over Republican Derrick Anderson, and his campaign has raised more than $12 million, according to the report.

Virginia’s power transformer industry booms as electricity demand soars

Virginia’s power transformer manufacturers are expanding and adding thousands of jobs as electricity demand climbs, Cardinal News reports.

Hitachi Energy is building a $457 million expansion in South Boston, in Halifax County, that will add 825 jobs by the time a new factory is completed in 2028, according to the report. Lynchburg-based Delta Star is adding more than 400 jobs, and Roanoke-based Virginia Transformer Corp. has grown from 450 Virginia employees in July 2022 to 1,200 today.

Burke & Herbert relocates Fredericksburg office after LinkBank acquisition

Burke & Herbert Bank relocated its Fredericksburg Commercial Banking Office to 410 William Street, the original location of Virginia Partners Bank, following its acquisition of LinkBank, the bank said.

The office, currently a loan production office, moved to establish a Market Financial Center. The center provides commercial, business, wealth, treasury and mortgage services, along with retail banking on the main level, the bank said.

Remnants of Hurricane Isaias will bring periods of rain, breezy conditions, and a chance of thunderstorms to Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Woodbridge starting tonight and continuing through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington. Rain is expected to begin late tonight and become widespread Sunday, with totals of three-quarters to one inch possible in many spots and locally higher amounts. East winds will increase Sunday, with gusts of 23 to 26 mph, and a few thunderstorms could develop Sunday afternoon, mainly east of the Blue Ridge.

Conditions improve Monday as the system moves offshore, with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s. Tuesday turns sunny and warmer, with highs near 80 to 82 degrees across the three areas. No Flood Watch is in effect for the region at this time, though the National Weather Service continues to monitor rainfall amounts.

Fredericksburg District weekly traffic alert: Oct. 11-17, 2026

VDOT listed scheduled lane closures for Oct. 11-17 in the Fredericksburg District, weather permitting, the agency said. Drivers can check 511 Virginia for updates.

On I-95, mobile northbound and southbound single lane closures run Monday–Saturday, 8 p.m.–5 a.m., between Exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) and Exit 148 (Quantico) for bridge inspections in Stafford. Other I-95 work includes soil sample collection between Exit 118 and Exit 143, Rappahannock River bridge inspections near Exit 130–133, pavement marker and rumble strip installation near Exit 143, and noise barrier work near Exit 126 in Spotsylvania.

Leadership Fredericksburg seeks Community Action Project proposals for the Class of 2027

Leadership Fredericksburg is seeking Community Action Project proposals for the Class of 2027, the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce said.

Organizations throughout Planning District 16 are invited to submit projects that give fellows the chance to put leadership skills into action while creating a lasting benefit for the community. Selected teams will work with the organizations to research, collaborate, develop resources, and provide recommendations. Projects should have a manageable scope, offer meaningful learning, and be completable between January and May. Applications are open through Oct. 12.
