Each year, the iWRITE literacy organization organizes a publishing contest for young writers and illustrators in grades three through 12.
This year, Anushka Misra, a seventh-grade student at Gainesville Middle School, emerged as one of the 125 winners chosen from across the globe.
On January 17, 2024, Karyn Riddle, Assistant Principal at Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School, was honored as the 2024 Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal of Virginia by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP). According to a Prince William County Schools spokeswoman, a panel of school leaders, including principals and division superintendents, carefully selected Riddle for this prestigious recognition.
Riddle, a proud graduate of Osbourn Park High School, has dedicated 24 years to the education of students in Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS). Her journey began at Osbourn Park High, where she spent a decade teaching and served as the school’s assistant principal for four years. Subsequently, Riddle contributed eight years in the central office as a student management supervisor, specializing in leadership development. In 2018, she assumed the role of assistant principal at Colgan High.

On Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 12:30 p.m., a disturbance unfolded at Brooke Point High School, located at 1700 Courthouse Road. Deputy D.J. Taylor, fulfilling his School Resource Officer (SRO) duties, responded to the commotion caused by two students engaged in a physical altercation.
Upon arrival, school staff assisted in separating the two students involved in the fight. Investigation revealed that student one had initiated the confrontation by approaching student two with the intention of starting a fight. As the victim tried to disengage from the situation, she became the target of an assault by the aggressor.
The proposed budget, totaling $453.4 million for the 2024-2025 school year, aims to prioritize student success, address growth, and emphasize the need for increased investment in education.
Taylor highlighted the adverse effects of postponed projects and declining funding on student performance. Comparing the situation to 2012, when the school system was adequately funded, Stafford Schools ranked 15th in Virginia for student performance.
As winter storms swept through Prince William County this week, the decision to close schools became a focal point of discussion.
Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) Superintendent Dr. LaTanya McDade, responsible for overseeing Virginia’s second-largest school system, shed light on the rationale behind the recent Code Red closures and the newly introduced Code Orange option.
Stafford County Public Schools: “The Stafford County School Board selected its new chair and vice-chair during the January 18, 2024 annual organizational school board meeting. The 2024 school board chair is Ms. Maureen Siegmund and Ms. Maya Guy will serve in the vice-chair position.”
“Ms. Siegmund has served as the Garrisonville District Representative on the Stafford County School Board for two years. She presently serves on the board’s Technology and the Joint Schools Working Commission. Ms. Siegmund is a product parent of four children, three of whom attend schools across all three grade levels. Ms. Guy is also a parent to a student in the school district.”
Prince William County Public Schools: “Due to hazardous road conditions forecast for areas of the county between 7 a.m. – 11 a.m. Friday morning, January 19, 2024, all Prince William County Public Schools and Offices will be closed Code Red.”
