Mayor Earnie Porta expressed gratitude, stating, “Thanks to the efforts of the Congresswoman and her staff, the town now is the recipient of almost a million dollars in funding that is going to enable us to be able to do the remediation and improvements on our stormwater system that, again, we simply could not have done ourselves.”

The nearly one million dollars allocated will be utilized to address various critical needs related to stormwater management. Porta outlined the intended use of the funds, stating that they will enable the town to undertake “the remediation and improvements on our stormwater system” that are essential for the community’s well-being and safety.


Prince William

In an effort to create a welcoming environment for mothers, the Virginia Women’s and Family Support Center Mom’s Boutique, located at 14019 Glenkirk Road in Gainesville, underwent a transformation with the support of Keller Williams’ RED Day of Service on May 9. According to an email sent to Potomac Local from an organization spokeswoman, the Mom’s Boutique will allow women to relax and feel at ease while shopping for essentials for themselves and their children.

The organization provides diapers, wipes, gently used or new clothing items, including onesies and pajamas, and a variety of hygiene products like baby soap, shampoo, lotion, and diaper rash cream. It also provides feeding supplies like bottles and sippy cups and, depending on donations, baby gear such as strollers, car seats, and high chairs.

Anticipating a turnout of over 4,300 runners, the event is set to commence at 6 a.m., with the final participant expected to cross the finish line by 10 a.m. Residents and commuters should prepare for significant road closures and potential delays between 3 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Temporary and rolling road closures will be enforced throughout the city, affecting various routes and intersections. To accommodate participants and spectators, parking will be available at the Central Park Shopping Complex. Attendees are advised to walk to the start line on Carl D. Silver Parkway near Gordon W. Shelton Drive.

The Inaugural Prince William County Public Schools Sports Fair is set to take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering a showcase of athletic opportunities within the public school system.

“All VHSL sports will be featured at the PWCS Sports Fair,” said school division spokeswoman Megan Silas. “This includes cheerleading, cross country, golf, field hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, baseball, crew, lacrosse, softball, soccer, tennis, and track.”

The Prince William County Service Authority has recently recognized the achievements of 11 middle and high school students from Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park for their outstanding submissions in the 2024 Prince William-Manassas Regional Science & Engineering Fair.

Teaming up annually with Prince William County Schools, the Service Authority reviews water- and wastewater-related projects in the Science & Engineering Fair, singling out exceptional endeavors for Service Authority Organizational Awards. The winners of this year’s student competition were presented with cash prizes and accolades during the May 9 Service Authority Board of Directors meeting.


Fairfax

This morning around 5:18 a.m., officers responded to a motorcycle crash on Rolling Road near Delong Drive in Newington involving a 2003 Honda 1300. The motorcyclist, Cornell Parish III, 32, of Woodbridge was taken to the hospital and pronounced deceased.

Preliminarily, detectives believe that a BMW sedan may have been involved in the crash based on evidence found at the scene. Detectives are actively investigating the crash’s circumstances and if speed or alcohol were factors.


Politics

With an eye toward future political aspirations, Representative Abigail Spanberger (D) of Virginia’s 7th Congressional District is set to host a telephone town hall on Thursday, May 16, from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

The town hall, a staple of political engagement for elected officials, comes following a security breach at Quantico Marine Corps Base, located within her district boundaries. On May 3, two men inside a box truck, claiming to work for Amazon, tried to run the gate and were stopped by military police, and turned over to ICE.
