Manassas Park sets 8:30 a.m. Sept. 11 flag raising; Latino Fest Sept. 13

The Manassas Park Governing Body approved a proclamation marking the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 and set a local flag-raising for 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11.

Mayor Alanna Mensing presided. A 2021 Governing Body resolution already named Sept. 11 a “day of heroes” in the city. The new proclamation, read into the record, notes nearly 3,000 people killed in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and honors first responders, military service members, and the city’s pledge to educate future generations. The motion carried. Officials invited residents to the Sept. 11 flag raising at 8:30 a.m., described as the time the attacks began.

Quantico mayor: town at 20% water pressure after base system failure; boil-water order coming

The Town of Quantico is running at about 20 percent water pressure after a problem on Marine Corps Base Quantico’s system, Mayor Kevin Brown said Tuesday, and the town has no estimate for when full service will return.

Brown said the town has not been given specifics on the cause. Residents began reporting pressure problems midday Monday, and some said they first noticed issues Friday. The entire town is affected — 560 residents and dozens of businesses — along with some portion of the base. Brown said he does not know the scope of the impact on the installation.

Baby dies after hit-and-run on Richmond Hwy in Woodbridge; driver still sought

A baby died after a hit-and-run on Richmond Highway in Woodbridge, Prince William County police said Monday.

The crash happened at 9:42 p.m. Sept. 3 in a parking lot in the 14500 block of Richmond Highway, near Gabe’s and Featherstone Road. A 28-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were walking through the lot when a dark-colored pickup struck both of them and left the scene. The truck has not been found.

Patriot High School student killed in Old Town Manassas First Friday shooting

Patriot High School Principal David Van Gelder told families and staff Saturday that one of the Nokesville school’s students was killed Friday night in the shooting at First Friday in Old Town Manassas.

“It is with profound sadness that I share that one of our students lost her life during the tragic shooting that occurred Friday evening at the First Friday event in Old Town Manassas,” Van Gelder wrote. “We are working with her family to provide any needed support, and my thoughts and deepest condolences are with all those who knew and cared for her.”

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors honored Brentsville District High School’s boys soccer team on Tuesday night, Sept. 1, after a season that returned the Tigers to the top of Class 3.

The recognition was held from the afternoon session because players were still in school. Chair-at-Large Deshundra Jefferson opened the item. Brentsville District Supervisor Tom Gordy represents the school. Coles District Supervisor Yesli Vega joined the presentation.

Community gathers at Manassas train station for vigil after First Friday shooting

Friends, neighbors and other residents gathered Saturday night at the Manassas train station to remember a 16-year-old girl killed a day earlier during First Friday in Old Town.

The informal vigil was organized by community members, not the city. Organizers had asked people to bring a candle, a flower, a photo or a memory. By nightfall, bouquets, prayer candles and a balloon lined the platform under the depot canopy, a few steps from the railroad tracks where police say the shooting unfolded Friday night.

Court records: First Friday murder suspect is a convicted felon, was out on bond

Tasheem Rashad Douglas, 21, is in custody and charged with second-degree murder in the killing of a 16-year-old girl during First Friday in Old Town Manassas, police said.

Manassas police also charged him with having a gun while committing a felony and having a gun as a convicted felon. He is being held at a local hospital.
