The Virginia Department of Education released new Standards of Learning data today.

The SOL tests measure student math, science, reading, and writing performance.


The state’s second-largest public school division, Prince William County, rolled back most of its coronavirus mitigation strategies.

When school starts Monday, August 22, schools will look and feel like the pandemic never happened, with a lack of masking, social distancing, and contract tracing requirements that were common last year.


Prince William County State Senator Jeremy McPike (D-29) says the Washington Commanders have a lot to work out if it wants to bring a football stadium to Woodbridge.

McPike said the team has no plans to mitigate the traffic effects drivers on Interstate 95 would feel if a new stadium were to be built at the Horner Road Commuter Lot, the state’s largest, just off Prince William Parkway.


At 4:43 a.m., units were dispatched to the 13000 blk of Tanazari Way to find a kitchen fire extinguished by the building’s automatic sprinkler system. The apartment’s occupant was cooking food on the stove but fell asleep.

Smoke detectors activated and alerted the occupant. The occupant sustained a minor injury attempting to remove the food from the stove. No other injuries were reported.


Tonight, Thursday, August 18, it will be 90s night at the Prince William County Fair, and country music artist Tracy Byrd, known for songs like “10 Rounds with Jose Cuervo” and “Watermelon Crawl,” will perform live at the grandstand.

Tickets are $35 to $40, are limited, and are on sale on the fair’s website.


Brendon Hannafin is the new development director for the Fairfax County Park Authority.

He will oversee the development and master planning for new parks and facilities in Virginia’s largest jurisdiction.


Sea lions are making a splash at the Prince William County Fair.

An animal act called Sea Lion Splash holds live performances at 6 and 8 p.m. nightly. During the 25-minute show, three sea lions demonstrate their skills by catching rings tossed into the air by an audience volunteer and how they can use their bodies to scoot across the land.


Occoquan Town Hall is now named for former Mayor June Randolph.

The former town mayor died at age 101 in May. Randolph served as Town Clerk, Town Treasurer, Town Council member, member of the Architectural Review Board, member and Chair of the Planning Commission, and Town Mayor from 1962 to 1963.


Garden lovers!  SERVE in Manassas needs volunteers to assist with upkeep of a meditation garden created for staff, clients and volunteers.  Volunteers will water, weed, and remove trash as well as give tables and benches a quick wipe down.  Volunteers must be at least 16 years to volunteer independently; volunteers under 16 can volunteer with a parent. Spanish speakers! Volunteer Prince William (VPW) urgently needs virtual Bilingual Volunteer Translators age 18+ to translate for our Alternative Community Service (ACS) clients who speak little or no English.  The volunteer will participate in a conference call between VPW staff and the client to translate questions and responses during the initial intake interview.  You’ll be scheduled once a week ahead of time for specific shifts and must be available by phone during these times.  Must be proficient in English and Spanish and able to speak clearly.  Accurate translation is a must!  You’ll feel great as you help those who struggle with English get enrolled in this important program!  Please email[email protected] to learn more.
