Volunteers of America: “Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas (VOACC) will launch its annual Operation Backpack back-to-school campaign on July 7, 2023… The goal of this year’s campaign is to raise $50,000 and collect brand-new backpacks, supplies, and school uniforms to support at least 3,000 boys and girls from income-constrained families in Maryland, DC, Virginia & North Carolina.”

“Initiatives like Operation Backpack® play an important role in helping to fill the gap in academic proficiency for children who are underserved and have experienced homelessness. According to the National Center for Homeless Education, children experiencing homelessness are more likely to show delayed development and have twice the rate of learning disabilities compared to non-homeless children. Among children who experienced homelessness in the U.S. in 2018, less than 30 percent achieved academic proficiency in reading, mathematics, and science.”

“The story is told from the point of view of Mary Worthington, the eldest spirit, who serves as both the group matriarch and narrator. When items for sale arrive at the store without spirits attached, the group becomes concerned. In attempting to figure out why, the spirits discover that the old farmhouse itself conceals a century-old secret. A ‘cozy’ mystery engages the reader in the story without overly graphic violence or language.”

Fredericksburg Nationals: “Delmarva plated four runs in the seventh inning to take down the Fredericksburg Nationals 7-4. The Nats jumped on Delmarva in the very first at-bat of the night, as Daylen Lile doubled. Cortland Lawson followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and then Sammy Infante singled through the right side to bring Lile home to make it 1-0 Fredericksburg.”

“In the top of the second, the FredNats again put runners on the corners with singles from Christopher De La Cruz and Daylen Lile. Daylen took off to steal second base, and an errant throw into center field allowed De La Cruz to score. But Delmarva’s throw back to the infield skipped away past third base, and Lile scored as well to push the lead to 3-0.”
