With the region’s elected officials gathering at their annual retreat this Friday and Saturday, the Coalition for Smarter Growth continued to urge reform of the region’s transportation priorities.

A national poll of 2001 voters (90% of whom are drivers) released last week by Transportation for America revealed that two-thirds of Americans know highway expansions don’t cure traffic. Sixty-seven percent of American voters polled agreed that widening highways attract more people to drive, which creates more traffic in the long run, defeating the stated purpose for countless road expansion projects across the country.

Stafford County Sheriff’s Office: “On July 13th at approximately 1:51 p.m. Deputy McAlister was in the area of Kings Highway and Cool Springs Road when the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a vehicle pursuit. It was advised the King George County Sheriff’s Office was pursuing a vehicle, and that vehicle was about to enter Stafford County.”

“Deputy McAlister predicted the suspect vehicle would be heading towards the Kings Highway and Little Street intersection. He responded to the intersection and got ready to deploy his stinger, commonly referred to as spike strips. In a matter of moments, the speeding vehicle headed the exact route Deputy McAlister predicted, putting him in perfect position.”

Stafford Sheriff’s office: “On July 6th, deputies responded to a sexual assault complaint involving a 10-year-old victim. Detective B.E. Abramaitys was assigned the investigation and began conducting interviews and obtaining search warrants. Felony arrest warrants were obtained for three counts of rape, three counts of forcible sodomy, three counts of aggravated sexual battery, and three counts of sexual abuse.”

“On July 7th a Deputy U.S. Marshal discovered that the suspect had fled the country. The deputy worked with Customs and Border Protection to identify the flight the suspect was on. Authorities determined the suspect was on a plane to Peru and were able to arrange for Peruvian law enforcement to be waiting as the suspect exited the plane and take him into custody.”

Prince William

“The investigation revealed the driver of a 2011 Honda Odyssey was traveling east on Somerset Crossing Way approaching the intersection with Forkland Way when the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was in the crosswalk. Fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene where the pedestrian was pronounced deceased.”

“The driver of the striking vehicle remained at the scene. Speed, alcohol, or drug use were not factors in the collision with the driver of the vehicle. The investigation continues.”

Prince William Police Department:Brandishing of a Firearm | Road Rage Related – On July 12 at 5:48PM, officers responded to the area of Ridgefield Rd. and Prince William Pkwy. in Woodbridge (22192) to investigate a brandishing.”

“The investigation revealed the victim, a 52-year-old man, was driving on Ridgefield Rd. when he was involved in a road rage incident with the driver of a grey Infiniti. During the encounter, the driver of the Infiniti pulled his vehicle up to the side of the victim’s vehicle and brandished a firearm towards the victim before quickly driving off.”
