Utility companies across the region report power outages as winds increase and temperatures drop.

There are reports of fallen trees on powerlines across the area following a powerful cold front that swept through the area this morning, prompting high wind gusts. The outages have caused traffic lights to go dark, prompting a police response.


The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and Electronics Recycling program at the Landfill will be temporarily closed.

According to a press release, the current contract expires at the end of December, and the contractor is unwilling to extend the contract because of the difficulty obtaining labor and higher operational costs.


If you must travel, VDOT urges you to adjust your travel time based on road and weather conditions. Roads may be more severe based on forecasts north and west of the Fredericksburg area, warns the state agency.

Air temperatures will begin to fall today and stay below freezing over the weekend as well as pavement temperatures will grow colder, which can cause the potential for a flash freeze risk on any wet pavement. This may cause slick, hazardous road conditions. Icy conditions may occur first on bridges, overpasses, ramps, elevated surfaces, and in shaded areas.


The community has rallied around a family of a man who died in a rollover car crash this week near Manassas Mall.

According to a GoFundMe spokeswoman who emailed PLN, the sister of Alex Randy Portillo, who died in a crash Tuesday night on Sudley Road, launched a GoFundMe page to help pay for his funeral expenses.

Some streets are flooded after the excessive rainfall across our area today, prompting a flood warning from the National Weather Service until 2:30 a.m. Friday, December 23, 2023.

Locations experiencing flooding include Manassas, Manassas Park, Dale City, and portions of western Prince William County.


The park in Doswell, Virginia, will open from 5 p.m. until 12:30 a.m., with rides closing at 10 p.m. as the New Year’s countdown party begins under the Eiffel Tower and concludes with a fantastic firework show planned at the stroke of midnight.

The New Year’s Eve celebration is also one of the last two operating days for the WinterFest event at the park for 2022. WinterFest has millions of Christmas lights, nearly 1,000 Christmas trees, and festive décor displayed throughout the 400-acre park. The iconic Eiffel Tower is transformed into a 300-foot-tall Christmas tree, and the well-known International Street fountains are turned into an ice-skating plaza known as Snowflake Lake.


Each year at Christmastime, the threat of house fires increases because of the dangers of holiday cooking, visitors, and strings of lights plugged into usually too few outlets.
