$24 million innovative intersection project approved in Manassas Park

On January 17, 2023, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) voted to approve funding for Phase I of the Route 28 (Centreville Road) Innovative Intersections project from Manassas Drive to Spruce Street in Manassas Park.

The CTB approved over $24 million worth of funding for the Innovative Intersections project. This funding was approved after years of efforts from Delegate Danica Roem (D), the Manassas Park Governing Body, and the Manassas Park Government staff to secure funding to improve Route 28, the city stateed in a press release.

Spanberger tours Germanna campus science buidling

On Thursday, January 19, 2023, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) toured Germanna Community College’s Virtual Hospital at its Locust Grove Campus in Orange County.

In December, she secured $251,000 to purchase equipment for the Robert C. O’Neill Wellness Clinic. The clinic will be part of a new Frank and Nancy Turnage Health Sciences Building at the Locust Grove Campus.

Stafford schools failed to notify students of National Merit commendations

Stafford County is now on the list of public school divisions that admits to not informing students of their National Merit Scholarship award.

Six students at Mountain View High School were not told about their recognition in time to file college applications. The school principal notified the school system administration about the error.

Manassas Museum expansion set to be completed by Fall 2023

The Manassas Museum has partnered with GWWO Architects to fulfil the “(Re)Imagine Your Museum” project, a major expansion effort set to be completed by Fall 2023.

This project – originally planned in 2008 – was set aside due to economic instability. Having finally begun in late 2022, the $7 million expansion effort will be completed by Fall 2023 – just in time for Manassas 150th birthday celebration.

Wall’s questions led to schools’ withheld merit data disclosure

Prince William County School Board member Jennifer Wall began asking questions after school administrators in neighboring Fairfax County Public became became the focus of an Attorney General investigation.

Earlier this month, we learned schools in Fairfax, and later in Loudoun, failed to tell students they received recognition form the National Merit Scholarship program.

Casper “Cap” Ray Whetzel

Casper “Cap” Ray Whetzel of Midland, VA, formerly of Brentsville, VA passed away January 11, 2023 in Fauquier County.  Born November 17, 1935 in Brentsville to Jesse James Whetzel and Tracie Irene Spitzer Whetzel.

Cap worked in grocery stores and was also a superintendent for Prince William schools.

Prince William issues apology after it failed to tell students about National Merit award

Prince William County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. LaTayna McDade issued a statement after administrators at Battlefield, Colgan, Forest Park, and Patriots failed to tell 28 students they received letters of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program.

While the students do not qualify for the scholarship, many students use the commendation letters on college applications. The school division said it learned about the error on Tuesday, January 16 when the original number of county high school students believed to have not been notified was 16.
