Stafford sheriff’s office nurses surprise batch of kittens

Stafford County Sheriff’s Office: “Back in April, a resident came to the Stafford County Animal Shelter to drop off a pregnant, stray cat she had found on her property. Almost immediately, the cat delivered three underweight kittens. One of the kittens had an issue with his front leg, requiring surgery to remove the damaged appendage. A huge thank you to Loving Touch Animal Hospital for providing the operation at no cost.”

“The kitten was affectionately named Footloose and Animal Caretaker L.C. Hopkins provided around the clock care to ensure his survival. Footloose went from the Danger Zone to meowing “I’m Alright!” We are pawsitively elated to report Footloose was officially adopted by Animal Caretaker Hopkins this week. Footloose is feline good and seems eager to take on a role as the shelter mascot. He also has the purrfect purrsonality to serve as an advocate for animal welfare.”

Fredericksburg erects historic highway marker honoring John Washington

Fredericksburg City Government: “A new historic highway marker honoring John Washington was unveiled Wednesday in front of the building where he used to live in downtown Fredericksburg.”

“The marker was unveiled in front of the building that now houses Foode and JON Properties at 900 Princess Anne Street. The unveiling followed a ceremony at the nearby Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall that drew approximately 125 people.”

‘Fourth in Fredericksburg:’ Events, street closures, parking locations

Fredericksburg City Government: “Notice of Downtown Street Closures on 4th of July: The 600-900 blocks of Sophia Street, 100 block of Hanover Street, and 100 block of Charlotte Street will be closed for a special event on Tuesday, July 4th, beginning at 2:00 A.M. and reopening at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 4, 2023. There will be signs in place to indicate the restrictions, and vehicles will be towed at the owners’ expense early Tuesday morning that have not been removed from these streets.”

“4th of July Events: Fourth in Fredericksburg showcases all of the happenings on the 4th of July in the City of Fredericksburg. National Weather Service Baltimore-Washington: “An unsettled pattern more typical of summer returns over the next several days with daily shower and thunderstorm chances. It won’t rain the whole time, but there’s at least a chance of rain at some point nearly every day.”

“Today: Areas of drizzle with a chance of rain before noon, then areas of drizzle with scattered showers between noon and 5pm, then showers likely with areas of drizzle after 5pm. Patchy fog before 4pm, then patchy fog after 5pm. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 71. Northeast wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.”

Primary voters rebuffed challengers in key attorney races

The Center Square: “In three key commonwealth attorney election primary races in northern Virginia, voters rejected the challengers in favor of progressive incumbents.”

“In Loudoun County, Democratic incumbent Buta Biberaj defeated challenger Elizabeth Lancaster by more than 10%. Biberaj was thrust into the national spotlight when she came under fire for her handling of sexual assault cases at two county high schools.”

Stafford Schools earns Business and Industry Partnership Award

Stafford County Public Schools: “The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) recently presented Stafford County Public Schools’ Firefighting Program with the Region III Secondary Business and Industry Partnership Award.”

“As part of the VDOE’s Creating Excellence Awards, the program was recognized for its partnership with the local fire department and promotion of excellence in Career and Technical Education.”

OmniRide update: Free rides, beautified bus shelters

OmniRide Director Bob Schneider places Manassas-area bus schedules into a time capsule during the city's 150th anniversary celebration.

OmniRide will give free rides again on Friday, June 30, 2023. It marks the second time the transit provider has offered free fares on a Friday this year. The move comes as Virginia Railway Express is providing free rides on Fridays until September 1.

OmniRide: “OmniRide will offer FARE-FREE rides on all Express routes on June 30. Fare-free travel is being offered to thank you for your continued patronage.”

Driver strikes pole, charged with DUI

Stafford County Sheriff’s Office: “On June 17th at approximately 4:04 a.m. Deputy J.J. Suh responded to the intersection of Telegraph Road and Woodstock Lane for a report of an auto accident. It was advised instead of traveling on the road, the driver struck a power line pole, drove through a fence, and ended up a few hundred feet in a field.”

“When Deputy Suh arrived on scene, he located the Dodge Charger with heavy damage. The driver had the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and advised he was traveling nearly double the speed limit. After conducting field sobriety tests, Deputy Suh arrested the driver.

Couple faces charges after deputies called to hotel

Stafford County Sheriff’s Office: “On June 16th at approximately 1:25 a.m. Deputy S.C. Jett responded to the Best Western, located at 2868 Richmond Highway, for a report of a disturbance. Dispatch received an open line call where they could hear people, who sounded intoxicated, mention someone had a gun. When Deputy Jett arrived on scene, he made contact with a male and female. The female advised she was currently in possession of the firearm. Due to the limited information, both were detained while deputies investigated what occurred.”

“It was discovered the two located were part of a group at Jay’s Sports Lounge. The group was causing a disturbance and were asked to leave. As they were leaving, the male handled his firearm and discharged it. Sergeant K.P. Lytle located the discharged shell casing later on. The female took possession of the firearm and the bag it was concealed in prior to Deputy Jett’s arrival.”

It’s been a nail-biter of a Primary Election in the 29th Virginia Senate District, which includes eastern Prince William and northern Stafford counties.

Incumbent Democrat Jeremy McPike is trying to hold on to his seat but faces tough competition from challenger and current House of Delegates member Elizabeth Guzman.
