Here’s a look at several New Year’s babies born at hospitals across our area.

Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg: “Mary Washington Hospital welcomed the first baby of the new year born in the Fredericksburg region. Baby girl Elaine Margot was born at 12:11 a.m. to Andrea Zevallos Paravicino and Aaron Hiler of Fredericksburg, weighing six pounds and 12 ounces.

Manassas Economic Development Department: “Kicking off the new year full of exciting events, festivals, and family-friendly activities – and starting with February’s First Friday in Historic Downtown Manassas.”

“The First Friday in 2024 will be Feb. 2, 6-9 p.m. This is the City’s 10th annual soup contest where competitors enter their tastiest soup for a chance to win cash prizes.”

When they put the motion for a city skatepark in front of the city council, there was a little progress with officials pointing at skating facilities in Brooks Park and then Curtis Park in Stafford County where the skateboarders were allowed to modify a section to skate in, but it still isn’t a real skate park.

“Whatever the rest of the world is doing, we’re doing the opposite,” said Mark Eyestone, owner of Magic Bullet Skateboards in Downtown Fredericksburg. He’s had a skate shop in Fredericksburg since 2002, and the discussion of a skatepark within the city has come up but went nowhere.

Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative: “Applications are being accepted through Feb. 16 for the 2024 Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, an annual all-expenses-paid, week-long event in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).”

“Applicants must be high school sophomores or juniors whose homes are served by Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC); eligibility extends to public, private, and home-schooled students.”
