City of Manassas celebrates Bee City USA designation with mural

A new wall mural at Kerbobble Toys will celebrate the Bee City USA designation of Manassas.

Manassas Town Council press release: Theresa Coates Ellis, Patron Manassas City Council Member of Manassas Bee Festival (June 22); Patricia Kouttab, Owner of Kerbobble Toys; Sherry Day, building owner of 9216 Center St.; Mark Olsen, Chair and Kristen Kiefer, Executive Director, Historic Manassas Inc., proudly announce the launch to create a new wall mural at an entrance to Historic Manassas on the wall of Kerbobble Toys celebrating the Bee City USA designation for the City of Manassas.

On May 2021, the Manassas City Council voted unanimously to become a Bee City USA, initiated by Council Member Coates Ellis, a trained master gardener and beekeeper. With that designation, the City must hold public awareness activities to plant native and to save our pollinators, including bees. The 4^th annual Manassas Bee Festival fulfills this requirement with a free family fun and educational event held on Saturday, June 22^nd from 10am to 2pm.

I-95 Northbound: Exit 133 (Falmouth/Warrenton) to Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway): Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. and Friday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Single lane closure starting at 9 p.m. followed by double lane closure at 10 p.m. on I-95 northbound at mile markers 133-135 for 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension work.

Spotsylvania County: Route 1 Northbound at Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road): Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Single lane closure for Route 606 widening project. The northbound right turn lane to eastbound Mudd Tavern Road will be closed.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Riverside Center for “The Wizard of Oz”

The Riverside Center for the Performing Arts is staging a production of “The Wizard of Oz.” This classic tale follows young Dorothy Gale as she travels from Kansas to the magical Land of Oz. Audiences will join Dorothy on her journey along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City in this stage adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s work, which includes the iconic score from the MGM film.

Performances are scheduled as follows: Wednesday matinees will have meal service from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., with show-only arrivals at 12:45 p.m., and the performance starting at 1:30 p.m.. Thursday to Saturday evenings will have meal service and appetizers from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., show-only arrivals at 6:45 p.m., and the performance starting at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees will feature meal service and appetizers from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m., show-only arrivals at 2:15 p.m., and the performance starting at 3 p.m.

Colonial Forge student selected as a National Youth Correspondent

Allie Medina, a junior at Colonial Forge High School, will represent Fredericksburg as a National Youth Correspondent.

Allie Medina, a junior at Colonial Forge High School, has been selected to represent Stafford as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2024 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University.

“I was so excited and really surprised,” said Medina. “I love journalism, so I’m excited to get the chance to make connections and improve my writing.”

Osbourn Park senior awarded 2024 National Merit Scholarship

Skye Auger, senior at Osbourn Park High School, has been named 2024 National Merit Scholarship winner.

Prince William County Schools: The National Merit® Scholarship Corporation named Skye Auger, a senior at Osbourn Park High School, a 2024 National Merit Scholarship winner. Auger was selected from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists and is one of 2,500 students nationwide to win the National Merit $2,500 scholarship.

“Winning this scholarship is the culmination of all the effort I’ve put into my academic life, and I’m really glad my hard work has paid off in this way. To all the underclassmen who are apprehensive about their futures, I’d just like to say that a strong work ethic always comes back to reward you, so keep trying at every opportunity that comes your way because you might be surprised by what you’re capable of. I also attribute this success to the great educational opportunities I’ve had in this county with teachers who have truly pushed me and given me an environment that I can develop in,” said Auger.

Stafford deputies nab Maryland homicide suspect at his home

On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, Stafford County deputies assisted Maryland homicide detectives in taking 22-year-old Raheem Adams into custody. Adams was wanted for first and second-degree murder in Prince George’s County, Maryland. He is being held without bond.

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit identified and charged Adams in connection with a fatal shooting at a car meet early Sunday morning, May 29, 2024. The victim was 26-year-old John Phipps of Waldorf. Community information was given to investigators, and Prince George’s County crime solvers played a role in the investigation.
