Occoquan community supports 8 displaced by apartment fire

Occoquan Mayor Earnie Porta: “Understanding that in a community like Occoquan we are all neighbors, many of you have inquired about how you might support those impacted by the fire [that displaced eight people] at 116 Washington Street in Occoquan. After considering the best means of offering support and consultation with some of those affected, Occoquan Town Council Member Eliot Perkins has taken the lead in establishing a GoFundMe page to raise money for those affected. All proceeds will be distributed evenly among the 6 housing units impacted by the fire.”

Prince William leaders are about to go on a ‘retreat’

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors will go next door to hold a retreat.

Supervisors will meet Monday and Tuesday, January 29 and 30, at Old Hickory Golf Club, less than a mile from the county government center in Woodbridge.

Poll: Nearly $300,000 later, is your life better now that Route 1 is renamed?

Jurisdictions in our region spent a cumulative $280,000 to rename Route 1, formerly Jefferson Davis Highway. Fredericksburg spent $90,000, followed by Stafford County with a $51,500 investment, and Prince William County contributing the most at $137,800.

Legislation HB2075, pushed by Delegate Joshua Cole (D-65, Fredericksburg, Stafford) and signed by then Gov. Ralph Northam (D) in 2o21, ruled that “any section of U.S. Route 1 in Virginia that is designated as the ‘Jefferson Davis Highway’ shall on the effective date of this act be designated and shall hereafter be known as the “Emancipation Highway” as of January 1, 2022.

Virginia Senate Democrats defeat bill that aimed to deterring overdose deaths

“A Virginia Senate committee narrowly defeated legislation Wednesday that would expand the circumstances in which a drug dealer could be charged with felony homicide in connection with a user’s death,” reports WTOP-FM. “The bill, a priority of Gov. Glenn Youngkin and fellow Republicans, was pitched as a deterrent to criminals that would save lives amid the rising tide of overdoses deaths, particularly those attributable to fentanyl. But the Democrats on the committee who voted it down voiced skepticism that stiffer penalties, rather than an approach focused on substance abuse treatment, would effectively address the root causes of the issue.”

The National Weather Service states that today’s weather will feature mostly cloudy conditions with a high near 40 and a south wind of 3 to 6 mph. Tonight, there’s a chance of snow before 2 am, transitioning to a chance of rain and snow between 2 am and 4 am, followed by likely snow after 4 am. Cloudy skies are expected, with a low of around 31 and a light and variable wind.

The precipitation chance is 60%, and new snow accumulation could be less than a half inch, according to the National Weather Service.

Senate committee recommends boosting teacher pay

“The Virginia Senate Education and Health Committee recommends legislation to boost teacher pay, following the committee’s first meeting of the 2024 legislative session,” reports Morgan Sweeney at The Center Square. “SB 104, sponsored by longtime senator and committee member Sen. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, would deeply impact teachers’ livelihoods in the commonwealth and require an ongoing commitment from the state. It seeks to raise Virginia teachers’ salaries to at or above the national average.”
