The 24th Annual Eagle Festival at Mason Neck State Park in Lorton returns on May 7.

This family-friendly event runs from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. It includes live animal shows, hands-on educational opportunities, and outdoor recreation clinics that all aim to highlight the natural history of Northern Virginia and foster stewardship of the environment.

The wonderful staff at Catholic Charities has a number of volunteer opportunities open for those interested in helping newcomers to our country.  Openings include ESOL Teachers in a variety of topics, Administrative Support in their Manassas, Fredericksburg and Arlington offices (bilingual skills in Spanish required) and On-Call Interpreters fluent in Dari, Pashto, and Farsi.  There’s also a new mentoring program in need of volunteers to help exceptional refugee students between the ages of 15 and 24.  You’ll feel great helping those new to our country navigate the various aspects of getting settled, and bridge language barriers!  Please email Lea Ann at [email protected] to learn more.

A man was stabbed Saturday night in Downtown Manassas.

Police were called on April 23, 2022, at 11:45 p.m., to the 9400 block of West Street, near a BB&T bank. According to police, one man was stabbed during the incident. Police could only describe the four men as black or Hispanic, wearing headscarves over their faces or ski masks.

A man who stole a woman’s purse pulled a knife on the victim when she tried to chase him down.

At 9:58 p.m. Saturday, April 23, officers went to the Bahama Breeze, at 2714 Potomac Mills Circle in Woodbridge to investigate a robbery. Police said a teenager entered the restaurant and grabbed a purse that was hanging on the wall near the hostess stand and fled.

Carlos Vaughn Balvin, 16, of Manassas, is an Eagle Scout.

To earn the honor, Balvin’s required Eagle Scout project was planning, coordinating, and executing a 400-foot path through a wooded area at Liberia House, a 19th Century plantation at 8601 Portner Avenue in Manassas now owned by the city and used as an events center.

The Manassas Host Lions Club has partnered with Manassas Clay to help Ukrainians in need.

The owners of Manassas Clay, Fran Newquist, and Jane Cullum, have provided display space and support for the project. At the same time, area potters donated their time, talents, and supplies to offer unique handmade, Ukrainian-themed crafted items.

Several locations in our area will accept unused medications as part of a regional drug take-back event.

Mary Washington Healthcare and Partners in Aging, along with the support of local law enforcement, announced Operation Medicine Cabinet. The spring drop-off will take place on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
