Dr. Babur Lateef posted to Twitter today a message asking residents to “never forget” the school closures that led to students across Virginia falling behind in math, science, reading, and writing, according to the latest Virginia Standards of Learning scores released Thursday, August 18.

“NEVER FORGET what misinformed and misled public health officials, politicians, constituencies, and media did to stop the busses and close schools,” Lateef stated.

Virginia State Police responded to a two-plane crash in Fauquier County. The crash occurred Saturday, August 20, at 9:05 a.m. along the 5100 block of Ritchie Road at a small airfield.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a Stearman Aircraft was attempting to land when another Stearman Aircraft was trying to take off. The two aircraft collided, which caused one of them to overturn.

At 11:30 a.m., Friday, August 19, crews were dispatched to the 16300 block of Topsail Lane, just off Route 1, for a house fire.

Crews found heavy fire and smoke from the garage, said Prince William County Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Chief Matt Smolsky. The fire extended into the home when, as fire crews began their attack.

The county closed all facilities, excluding the courthouse and parks and recreation activities. Emergency services were also on duty on Friday, August 19.

The closure came as the Stafford Warriors, a travel baseball team, advanced to a Babe Ruth Baseball World Series game to have been played on Friday, August 19, at Virginia Credit Union Stadium in Fredericksburg.

Occoquan officials will gather at Town Hall today to remember the 50th anniversary of Hurricane Agnes.

A new piece of art will be unveiled. The creation uses a part of The Route 123 bridge that fell during the storm, Mayor Earnie Porta said. The commemoration begins at 11 a.m. at 458 Mill Street.

Police said a Maryland man was driving under the influence when he struck a firefighter at the scene of a car crash on Interstate 95.

At 11:08 p.m. Thursday, August 18, firefighters were called to a crash on I-95 north near. Garrisonville Road. Police said the driver, who was not involved in the crash, sped into the back of a fire truck parked on the side of the highway.

Jacob Young scored twice, and Sammy Infante went deep, but the FredNats fell to the Hillcats 4-3 Friday at Bank of the James Stadium in Lynchburg. The six-game series between the two sides is now tied at 2-2.

Young now stands at 99 runs scored this season. He leads both Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball in runs scored. Aaron Judge is the only other player with 98. Young finished with three hits and reached base four times. His single in the first was his 100th hit of the year.
