Dumfries native wins Knight-Hennessy scholarship, Naval Academy

U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Alex Romano, 22, of Dumfries, Virginia, was recently named a 2023 Knight-Hennessy Scholar. The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program provides full funding for students to pursue a graduate degree at Stanford University.

Romano is one of 85 scholars selected for the program’s sixth cohort of students. More than 7,000 candidates competed for one of the 85 scholarships awarded. He intends to pursue a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford School of Engineering.

OHS senior, East End Mobile Home Park resident wins scholarship

Daniel Mendoza, a 17-year-old Osbourn High School senior and resident of the East End Mobile Home Park, has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Virginia Manufactured and Modular Housing Association (VMMHA).

The award was presented by CFH Executive Director George Davies, whose Dumfries, Va.-based nonprofit took ownership of East End in 2018 and continues to upgrade and add events and programs at the Centreville Road park.

Son was aggressor in triple homicide, police said

Prince William County police said a 38-year-old man got into an argument, attacked and killed his parents, and died from injuries received during the incident.

Police said his injuries were not self-inflicted and were from a bayonet.

Pursuit ends in arrest, smashed police car

A 27-year-old Maryland man apparently thought it was a good idea to smash his car into a police SUV that had been chasing him.

At approximately 10:49 a.m. Wednesday (May 17), Virginia State Police located a GMC Yukon that Prince William County Police was looking for in connection with an ongoing investigation. The GMC was on Route 1 in Prince William County heading north towards the Fairfax County line.

Man who used a hammer to attack Manassas-area retail store arrested in Richmond

Armed Robbery *ARREST – On May 15, 2023, the suspect sought in connection to the robbery that was reported to have occurred at the Dollar and Gift store located at 7630 Streamwalk Lane in Manassas (20109) on January 13, 2022, was arrested. The accused, identified as Esteban Jesus DURAN, was located and taken into custody by the Richmond Police Department where he will remain until transported to Prince William County.
