Bristow — Prince William County Police Academy Graduates 60th Basic Law Enforcement Session

The Prince William County Criminal Justice Academy graduated its 60th Basic Law Enforcement Session on Friday, April 25, 2025, during a ceremony at Chapel Springs Church in Bristow. The graduating class included 17 Prince William County Police officers and one Prince William County Sheriff’s deputy. Each graduate completed 24 weeks of training in areas such as firearms, use-of-force decision making, driver training, legal training, patrol techniques, criminal investigation, and crash investigation. Police officers typically start with an annual salary of $62,000.

Police Blotter: Shooting, Stabbing, Assaults, and Arrests Across Prince William and Stafford Counties

WOODBRIDGE — Prince William County police are investigating a shooting that occurred at approximately 1:48 p.m. on April 24 in the 14900 block of Enterprise Lane. Officers said a verbal altercation between occupants of a red sedan escalated into gunfire between the sedan’s occupants and nearby pedestrians.

The sedan fled the scene by vehicle, and the pedestrians left on foot before police arrived. One bullet struck a home, causing debris to injure a resident inside. Another round struck an unoccupied vehicle. Officers and a K-9 unit searched the area but were unable to locate anyone involved. The investigation is ongoing.

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Suhas Subramanyam Leads Bipartisan Effort to Expand USPS Shipping to Alcoholic Beverages

Representatives Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced the bipartisan USPS Shipping Equity Act, which would allow the U.S. Postal Service to ship alcoholic beverages directly to consumers. Subramanyam, who represents Manassas and western Prince William County, said the bill would expand opportunities for local breweries, vineyards, and distilleries while providing a new revenue source for USPS. Industry groups, including the American Craft Spirits Association and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, support the bill.

Fredericksburg — Grant to Provide Mental Health Therapist to City School Division

The Rappahannock Area Community Services Board received a $90,000 grant from the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation to support behavioral healthcare services in Fredericksburg City Schools. The grant will fund a therapist position, comprehensive assessments, screenings, referrals for treatment, care management, counseling services, and family support services. RACSB officials said the funding will help address mental health needs among students.

City Investigates Cause of Drained Canal, Plans Repairs and Maintenance

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — City officials are investigating after the canal was found drained on Thursday morning, prompting concerns from residents about the cause and potential impacts on the surrounding environment.

City spokeswoman Caitlyn McGhee said the issue appears to have originated from one of the canal’s sluice gates, which was found open, along with an unknown problem involving a level sensor. Both issues are under active investigation.

Manassas — 30-Day Warning Period to Begin for Photo Red Light Enforcement at Liberia Avenue and Richmond Avenue Intersection

A 30-day warning period for photo red light enforcement at the intersection of Liberia Avenue and Richmond Avenue in Manassas will begin on May 1, 2025.

After the warning period ends on June 1, 2025, active enforcement will start, and citations will be issued to violators. Each potential violation will be reviewed by a Manassas City Police Officer before a citation is issued.

Winsome Sears to Headline Record-Breaking Lincoln-Reagan Dinner in Manassas

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican candidate for Virginia governor, will headline this year’s Lincoln-Reagan Dinner hosted by the Prince William County Republican Committee on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at Foxchase Manor, located just outside Manassas.

Republican Committee Chairman Jacob Alderman says this year’s dinner will be the largest the committee has ever hosted. “We’re on pace to double, maybe even triple our normal turnout,” Alderman said in an interview on the Potomac Local News Podcast. “I think we’re going to have over 300 people there. We’ve only got maybe 40 or 50 tickets left to go.”

HAYMARKET, Va. — ~~The Haymarket Town Council is set to revisit a controversial Chick-fil-A drive-through expansion proposal during its upcoming work session on Monday, April 28, 2025~~, as questions remain about the project’s approval from key regulatory agencies.

Earlier this month, the council narrowly approved Special Use Permit (SUP) #2024-001 in a 4-0 vote, allowing the Chick-fil-A at 15186 Washington Street to proceed with a revised site plan known as “Exhibit 6.” The updated plan proposes extending the restaurant’s rightmost drive-through lane onto an adjacent property owned by Virginia National Bank, creating a bypass lane and adding a mobile order pickup point aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing wait times.

Manassas Park Proposes FY2026 Budget with Tax Rate Cut, but Homeowners Could See $483 Higher Bills

MANASSAS PARK, Va. — Manassas Park homeowners could see their tax bills rise by hundreds of dollars under the proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget, despite a planned reduction in the city’s real estate tax rate.

City Manager Carl Cole presented the $129 million budget to the Governing Body on April 22, 2025, proposing a one-cent reduction to the real estate tax rate, which would lower it to $1.395 per $100 of assessed value. However, because the average assessed value of residential properties increased by 7.48%, the typical single-family homeowner, with an average home value of $507,689, would still pay approximately $483 more in real estate taxes next year.
