The hustle and bustle of the holiday season are upon us. I’m surprised at how fast it creeps up on us every year.
This Thanksgiving, as we do each year, will take a break for a holiday and reflect on the many blessings in our lives.

Prince William police: “We remember fallen #PWCPD Ofc. Mike Pennington. On #ThanksgivingDay, November 22, 1990, he lost his life while attempting to serve a search warrant related to the shooting of a law-enforcement officer. Mike selflessly went into danger to protect & serve. We will #NeverForget him.”
Officer Down Memorial Page: “Police Officer Philip Pennington was shot and killed on Thanksgiving Day after he and other officers responded to the home of a man who had ambushed and shot an Arlington County sheriff’s deputy the previous day.”
National Park Service: “Kick-off the 2023 holiday season with the National Christmas Tree Lighting. This tradition is presented by the National Park Service (NPS) and the National Park Foundation (NPF), and will feature musical performances and the official lighting of the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse at The White House and President’s Park in Washington, D.C.”
“This year, the ceremony and official lighting will take place on Nov. 30. Hosted by American country artist Mickey Guyton, this year’s event features Darren Criss, Samara Joy, Ledisi, Reneé Rapp, St. Vincent, Joe Walsh, and Dionne Warwick. The event will also feature performances by the United States Coast Guard’s Guardians Big Band.”
Department of Motor Vehicles: “All Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) full-service customer service centers will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday from Thursday, November 23 through Saturday, November 25, and will reopen on Monday, November 27.”
“This project, made possible by a $75,000 grant through the National Wildlife Federation’s Chesapeake WILD program, is a testament to the successful restoration efforts of Public Works and to the power of regional partnerships. The Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) submitted the grant application and will join County staff in working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Harrison Lake National Fish Hatchery and the George Mason University Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (PEREC) to administer the program.”
Manassas Park Police: “The Manassas Park Police Department is currently investigating a homicide. On November 21, 2023, at approximately 7:37 PM, Officers responded to a residence on Jessica Drive for a report of a shooting. The victim, Jose Alonso Bedregal, 25, of Bristow, was located in the residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
“The suspect, identified as Anthony Andrade, 25, of Manassas Park, was charged with Second Degree Murder and the Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. He was subsequently held without bond at the Prince William County ADC. This continues to be an active investigation; due to the ongoing investigation, certain details will not be released.”
Prince William Police Department: “Attempt to Disarm a Law Enforcement Officer [LEO] – On November 18 at 10:02 p.m., while patrolling in the area of Easy
Street and Richmond Highway in Woodbridge officers located a man trespassing in a posted no trespassing area. During the encounter, officers determined the man, later identified as the accused, was also actively wanted. As officers attempted to detain the accused, he actively resisted and refused to follow officers’ commands. At some point during the encounter, the accused attempted to retrieve a knife from his waistband and when officers prevented him from doing so, he struck an officer in the face. The accused then grabbed another officer’s neck before grabbing the officer’s weapon and attempting to remove it from the holster. After an additional brief struggle, the accused was secured without further incident. Officers also determined the accused was in possession of suspected illegal narcotics. Minor injuries were reported. Following the investigation, the accused, identified as Navon Malik REID, was arrested. Arrested on November 18: Navon Malik REID, 26, of no fixed address. Charged with 1 count of attempted disarming of a LEO, 2 counts of assault & battery on LEO, 2 counts of obstruction of justice, and 1 count of possession of schedule I/II drug. Court Date: Pending | Bond: Held WITHOUT Bond.”
Elbe J. d’Oliveira Jr. (Age 83)
Elbe J. d’Oliveira Jr., 83, of Southington, CT and formerly of Woodbridge, VA, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 19, 2023. Elbe was the loving husband of Sheila M. (Lefebvre) d’Oliveira for 56 years. Elbe was born on August 8, 1940 in New Bedford, MA to the late Elbe Sr. and Helen (Krakowiak) d’Oliveira and graduated from New Bedford High School, Class of 1958.
