The Center Square: “Federal funding for a critical rail project supporting a new bridge crossing the Potomac River connecting the District of Columbia and Virginia has been secured.”
“The announcement was made Thursday in Arlington. A group of bipartisan lawmakers from Virginia celebrated the $729 million funding to support the completion of the new Long Bridge, which is anticipated to ease rail traffic bottlenecks, expand freight capacity and improve commuter rail capability.”
A Patriot High School student was struck by a car driven by another student in front of Marsteller Middle School on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023.
A 17-year-old driver struck a 16-year-old boy who was walking outside the middle school about a mile from Patriot High, 10504 Kettle Run Road in Nokesville.
Updated 9:35 a.m. — “Flood Watches have been expanded across northern and central MD as well as northern VA Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 2.50″ are expected with locally higher totals across the DC/Baltimore metros,” the National Weather Service reports.
“In elementary schools, we are seeing improvement in reading levels, specifically a 5% increase in our Phonological Awareness Literacy Screenings (PALS), a comprehensive assessment of young children’s knowledge of the important literacy fundamentals that are predictive of future reading success,” reports Prince William County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. LaTanya McDade.
“Also, earlier this week, the School Board voted on the 2024-25 school calendar. Option A was selected in alignment with the community and staff survey results. As a reminder, Option A provides a full two weeks at winter break and a teacher workday following spring break. The 2024-25 school calendar’s first day of school for students will be August 19, 2024.”

Prince William Police Department: “Shooting Investigations *ADDITIONAL ARRESTS – On December 7, detectives obtained petitions for additional suspects involved in the shootings that were reported to have occurred at residences located on Kenmore Drive and Kentland Drive in [Dale City] on November 27.”
“Further investigation revealed on November 25, the previous suspect, a 15-year-old male juvenile, was determined to be involved in taking a firearm from a vehicle parked on Northgate Drive and had stolen a vehicle from Potomac Mills on November 26. The stolen vehicle was recovered on November 28, and the stolen firearm was subsequently recovered on November 29, both in the Woodbridge area.”
