Dr. Sam Hill announced his retirement at the end of the spring semester after a five-decade career in higher education.
Hill joined has served as provost at the Woodbridge Campus of Northern Virginia Community College since 2005. Over his 17 years, Hill has grown campus enrollment, adding to and updating the physical campus, expanding transfer and career programming, and welcoming signature student support programs like Year Up.
Kitty and Ben Wafle made a $250,000 donation supporting Germanna Community College’s Early College programs in honor of her late parents, Douglas Earle Quarles, Jr. and Kathryn “Kitty” Maddux Quarles.
In Germanna’s Early College program, students can complete and graduate with an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in General Studies while concurrently enrolled in high school.

The $17.5 million base at Innovation Park Prince William provides new wet lab space for fledgling life-science companies. The area is designed to be the next step up for companies graduating from the Prince William County Science Accelerator at George Mason University’s Science and Technology Campus outside Manassas, serving as an incubator for scientists at start-up life-science companies.
The demolition derby will return to the Prince William County Fairgrounds this weekend.
The Crash ‘n Bash Demolition Derby starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the expo and events center outside Manassas, at 10624 Dumfries Road. Tickets for the event are sold on the fairground’s website and are $15 for ages 11 and up, $5 for ages 2 to 10, and children aged two and younger are free.
On Tuesday, April. 5, School Board Chairman At-large Dr. Babur Lateef will present its 2022-23 operating budget during the Board of County Supervisors’ 7:30 p.m. meeting.
The school’s proposed $1.4 billion budget is $187.2 million larger than a year ago. It includes $80 million to furnish teachers and staff with a 4.2 percent cost of living adjustment and a step increase, resulting in an average pay increase of 7 percent.
Rising gas prices are having a significant negative impact on the economic recoveries of nearly two-thirds of Virginia small businesses, according to a poll released by the small business organization Alignable.
“Nearly two out of three Virginian small business owners (65%) told us they’ve been very significantly affected by the elevated gas prices over the past couple of weeks,” Chuck Casto, the head of research and news at Alignable.com, told The Center Square.
