(The Center Square) – Senate Bill 15, sponsored by Sen. Barbara Favola, D-Arlington, passed the House unanimously, 99-0, last week after passing the Senate with strong bipartisan support, 37-2. The legislation now heads to Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s desk.

The first units on the scene reported smoke coming from the front and rear of a single-story, single-family home. Crews entered the house found fire toward the rear of the home.

The fire was brought under control in less than 10 minutes. The two occupants of the residence were not home at the time of the fire.

[Updated March 7] Prince William County taxpayers are now investors in a new firm that produces materials the size of materials, devices, and structures at dimensions less than 100 nanometers.

On Tuesday, March 1, the Board of County Supervisors gave $50,000 to the George Mason University Nanofabrication facility. The $3 million, 2,350 square foot facility at the Institute for Advanced Biomedical Research building on the university’s Sci-Tech Campus outside Manassas will produce materials for electronic devices, biological sensors, biomedical devices, and optoelectronics.

I attended the Prince William Chamber of Commerce Annual Business Awards ceremony on Thursday, February 24, where hundreds of people came to the Heritage Hunt Country Club in Gainesville — yes, hundreds — for the awards. It was the first in-person Chamber Awards ceremony since the pandemic began.

It was great to see so many old friends again and small business owners who survived and thrived during one of the most uncertain moments in our lifetimes. Congratulations to all of the winners.

The Stafford County Board of Supervisors voted to rezone 46 acres from suburban residential to residential mixed-use to develop a new neighborhood called Mainline.

Estimating a $14 billion budget surplus over the next three years, Youngkin calls for giving every state resident a $1,500 tax cut during the first year. The Republican, now seven weeks on the job, also called for doubling the standard income tax deduction to $9,000 for single filers, and $18,000 for joint filers.

The governor also said a new gas tax that was to go into effect in July would be suspended for one year. Youngkin also said he is working with leaders in the General Assembly to make good on a campaign promise to eliminate the state’s grocery tax.
