Virginia’s Sears says charter school expansion could yield college diversity

(The Center Square) – As Virginia lawmakers continue to debate the specifics of a proposed lab school program, Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears is arguing university-run charter schools, also known as lab schools, could help increase diversity in higher education.

Lab schools would be public K-12 schools run by a university or other higher education institution, which would focus on testing different education models and studying how various models affect students. Currently, there are no lab schools in Virginia and there are fewer than 10 charter schools.

Route 1 widening in Dumfries: Project on track for 2027 completion

The project will also convert the current southbound alignment into a two-way roadway for local traffic.

The 2-mile project will include retaining walls, storm drainage improvements, stormwater management facilities, pedestrian, and multi-modal improvements. The purpose project is to relieve existing and projected traffic congestion, manage access, as well as improve safety by including pedestrian infrastructure.

Mommy Room makeover: Woodbridge High School teachers, students redecorate

The Mommy Room at Woodbridge Senior High School Lake Ridge has a new look.

Math teacher Joshua Johnson painted the room a soothing blue and added the letters “LOVE” to each wall. Former student Carolina Block helped make bulletin boards for staff members to hang up pictures of their babies. Executive Administrative Assistant Anita Sweeney, Assistant Principal Cynthia Treichler, and math teacher Katherine Mulligan also helped decorate the room.

Strasburg throws 5 no-hit innings, FredNats beat Salem to split series

Stephen Strasburg pitched five no-hit innings and faced one over the minimum in his second rehab start, Sammy Infante and Leandro Emiliani both hit two home runs, and the FredNats beat the Salem Red Sox 7-4 on Sunday, May 29, 2022, in front of over 5,600 fans at Virginia Credit Union Stadium to split the series with Salem.

Strasburg had six strikeouts and just one walk in five no-hit innings. He threw 58 pitches and 38 strikes, and was very sharp in his second rehab stint in Fredericksburg this week.

Behind bars: Cops charge suspect in Triangle murder

Today, members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force located and arrested the man sought in connection to the murder of 52-year-old Miles Tracey Hall of Triangle.

Hall was shot and killed in the 3600 block of Tavern Way in Triangle on May 15. The joint investigation with Dumfries Police Department revealed that the victim and the accused were known to one another and involved in an altercation.

3 years, 9 months: Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing complete

Construction on the $132 million Interstate 95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project is complete, on time and on budget, VDOT says.

Local traffic and through traffic are now divided among six travel lanes between Exit 133 (Route 17) in Stafford County to south of Exit 130 (Route 3) in Spotsylvania County, which is significantly improving mobility on I-95 since 70% of the traffic volume crossing the Rappahannock River is local drivers accessing either the Route 17 and Route 3 interchanges or both.

OmniRide sees gains in ridership, proposes Sunday service

OmniRide’s ridership has begun to rebound from the pandemic in recent months. Average commuter daily ridership for May 2022 is trending to where it’s more than 50 percent of the last full month prior to 2020 pandemic-related closures and reduced services.

OmniRide’s Express (commuter bus) daily ridership increased nine percent this April compared to March and has increased almost 30 percent since February. Daily average ridership for the first two weeks of May is nine percent higher than the last two weeks of April and 13 percent higher than all of April.  According to OmniRide, the increase could be due to the Federal Government’s order for employees to return to the office – as OmniRide takes commuters to such government agencies as the Pentagon, State Department, and other government centers

Fashion show to benefit domestic violence nonprofit Empowerhouse

The show will be held as a benefit for Empowerhouse, a nonprofit that supports survivors of domestic violence. The nonprofit operates in Fredericksburg and Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline counties.

The CNEW seeks to collect clothing and accessories from local stores and boutiques in Fredericksburg to raise money that will go to funding Empowerhouse.
