Student Art Competition: National Museum of the Marine Corps

The National Museum of the Marine Corps Fifth Annual Marine Corps Student Art Competition opens March 1, 2023, to all U.S. students in grades K-12. This year’s theme is “Leatherneck Legends.”

Student artists are asked to create a piece of 2D art inspired by the life, stories, and/or achievements of an individual Marine or “Leatherneck.” Suggestions include: a Marine from history (past or present), a Marine the student knows personally, Wounded Warrior Marines, Combat Veteran/Veteran Marines, or any United States Marine that the student artist believes is deserving of the “legend” title.

Cops show featuring Spotsylvania sheriff’s office gets 90 more episodes

Spotsylvania Sheriff's office responded to a domestic violence report that resulted in an officer shooting.

The REELZ TV network ordered 90 new episodes of On Patrol: Live, extending the run of the police-focused documentary series through January 2024.

Regionally, the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office was featured on the show in December 2022. The show’s producers Producers call police agencies across the country, in rural, urban, and suburban areas, seeking departments to be featured on the show.

15-year-old charged with making bomb threats to Manassas schools

Police announced the arrest of a suspect in connection to a bomb threat that prompted administrators to bar doors at schools in the Manassas area on January 26, 2023.

Police learned of the first bomb threat at Unity Reed High School (formerly Stonewall Jackson Senior High School) at 8820 Rixlew Lane near Manassas. While investigating the incident, officers learned about a similar threat at Osbourn High School in Manassas.

The Virginia Department of Transportation closed the Interstate 95 northbound off-ramp at the exit 136, at Centerport Parkway in Stafford County to assist emergency responders with a tractor-trailer fire.

The I-95 northbound off-ramp at exit 136 is expected to be closed for several hours.

Vega: More people should be allowed to own chickens as egg costs rise

The average price of a dozen eggs in the U.S. was $4.25 in 2022, up from $1.54 in 2019.

And it’s only expected to rise, making it more difficult for residents to feed their families. Prince William County Coles District Supervisor Yesli Vega says she’s received letters, including one from the father of a family of 10, who goes through 20 eggs a day to feed his family, asking her if something can be done to ease the family’s egg woes.

Eyes on the road: New security cameras coming to Stafford school buses

A Stafford County Public Schools bus. The School Board on Sept. 8 deferred any high school schedule change for 2027–28 after nearly 90 minutes of public comment focused on electives.

Stafford County Public Schools will replace security cameras on 85 school buses.
