Fredericksburg prepares for annual ‘Coldest Night of the Year’ fundraiser to support homeless

Area churches and local supporters will gather on Feb. 24, 2024, for its annual fundraiser, “Coldest Night of the Year,” a family-friendly walk to benefit Micah ministries. Micah is a coalition of area churches dedicated to helping Fredericksburg city residents with unmet needs.

According to its website, city congregations have supported the homeless since the 1980s. They banded together in 2005 to establish a permanent location and organization to continue serving the community. Micah and its partnering churches address the community’s needs by offering a hospitality center, meals, job assistance, cold weather shelters, and housing options to residents in need.

Time’s up for Stafford schools’ ‘power hour’ lunch; Division reverts to 3-bell lunch schedule amid safety concerns and student incidents

The school division announced it will revert to a three-bell lunch schedule starting Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024. Potomac Local was the first to tell you administrators were scrutinizing the extended “power hour” lunch period following the arrest of at least 10 students involved in an early-morning fight at Brooke Point High School on January 29, 2024.

Later that day, police placed the school on lockdown after students assaulted two Brooke Point teachers in a separate incident.

Mammoth pancake, not Civil War, celebrated at Battlefield Restaurant

The Battlefield Restaurant has a pancake on the menu that’s the size of a medium pizza and more than enough for a breakfast entrée. The question is, how do you flip it on the grill?

“I can do it with one spatula,” said diner owner and operator Cindy Jenkins, who claimed it’s all in the wrist. “My son uses two.”

Tonight: Stafford Schools $453 million budget public hearing; Speakers sign up before 4 p.m.

The Stafford County School Board wants to hear from residents about the school division superintendent’s proposed budget for the 2024-2025 school year tonight, Feb. 6, 2024, at 7 o’clock.

Dr. Thomas Taylor unveiled a $453.4 million operating plan to prioritize student success, address growth, and emphasize the need for increased investment in education.

The current weather pattern indicates a vigorous upper low over Florida and the Bahamas, with upper-level ridging extending from the Southern Plains to the Great Lakes. Two shortwaves are moving down the front side of the ridge, with the first passing to the south of the area and the second extending from northern New Jersey to southern New England.

The second shortwave is expected to bring a weak reinforcing shot of cooler air, resulting in sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-40s for most, a bit cooler than yesterday.

Worrilow highlighted the resilience of Virginia’s real estate market in 2024, surpassing earlier expectations. Despite a slowdown in 2022 and 2023, the market is witnessing a steady pace of home sales.

Worrilow attributed the previous slowdown to a rapid interest rate surge, causing buyers and sellers to exercise caution. With interest rates now stabilizing, there is a renewed sense of optimism in the market. The potential for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates further could stimulate activity by attracting more investors and influencing mortgage rates.
