Double Homicide Investigation Underway near Manassas

Early on Sunday, October 13, Prince William County police responded to a welfare check at a residence on the 8900 block of Hanson Grove Gt in Manassas, where they found a man and woman shot dead in the basement.

A person of interest has been detained in New Jersey, and investigators believe the individuals were known to each other. Detectives are actively investigating the case and have not yet filed charges. Authorities seek information from the public and will release more details as the investigation continues.

IKEA Reopens Smaland Playground at Potomac Mills After 3-Year Closure

IKEA at Potomac Mills Mall is reopening its Smaland kids’ playground after being closed for over three years. The reopening marks IKEA Woodbridge as the first store to pilot a new format for children’s play.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce, will take place on Friday, October 18, 2024, from 10 to 11 a.m. Following the ceremony, the play area will be open to the public.

Cowan Boulevard to Close for 3 Weeks beginning October 21 for Sewer Main Replacement

As reported in July, approximately 1,480 linear feet of sewer main is being replaced through the Belmont Apartments and under Cowan Boulevard, which includes the section that failed on New Year’s Eve 2023 and resulted in a Cowan Boulevard emergency closure in January of this year. The City’s Public Works Department and its contractor, W.C. Spratt, have been working to replace the sewer main since late winter. Replacement of this essential sewer infrastructure is now roughly 80% complete.

Manassas Offers New Spanish-Speaking Resources for Residents

The City of Manassas is now offering new services to Spanish speakers in an effort to better reach residents.

The new services include an anonymous Spanish-only WhatsApp channel to stay updated on the city, Spanish email notifications and emergency alerts, Spanish messaging for events and YouTube videos that can be viewed in Spanish.

Prince William Chamber Hosting Affordable Workforce Housing Panel

The Prince William County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a panel on affordable workforce housing on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Potomac Valley Church in Dumfries.

The summit will bring together multiple industry leaders, policymakers and developers to discuss strategies that will benefit Prince William County. It will be hosted at the Potomac Valley Church at 1006 Williamstown Drive in Dumfries from 5 to 7 p.m. Registration is encouraged.

Annual Band Together to Fight Hunger Returns Nov. 4, Featuring 397 Students and Five Marching Bands

Stafford County Public Schools will host its 14th annual Band Together to Fight Hunger Program on November 4, 2024. The event will be held at Mountain View High School at 7 p.m.

In 2005, Mountain View High School welcomed its first Band Director, Doug Armstrong, a Virginia Tech graduate who helped establish Hokies for the Hungry, a fundraiser supporting the local food bank in Blacksburg, VA. Inspired by this, Armstrong created Band Together to Fight Hunger in Stafford County to help the community. The annual event gathers five high school marching bands—Mountain View, Colonial Forge, Stafford, Brooke Point, and North Stafford—to perform their shows.

Q+A with Prince William’s New Social Services Director

Prince William County recently appointed Phyllis Jennings-Holt as the new director of the Department of Social Services following a national recruitment process.

Jennings-Holt has worked in the county since September 1992 in various roles in DSS. She’s been a social worker, case manager, assistant director of protective services and deputy director. Jennings-Holt was the acting director of DSS starting in June, and effective immediately became the director.

Prince William Police to Hand Out Free Car Tracking Tags

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — or until the approximately 900 tags are gone — PWCPD will be distributing free tracking tags to county residents to help locate and recover stolen vehicles. According to a public information officer in PWCPD, the county’s completed and attempted thefts are up 13% from this time last year.

The PIO said the department picked Woodbridge High School because it’s “somewhat central” and is densely populated. Detectives will be able to install the tags onsite.

Police Called to Domestic Incident at Rolling Brook Apartments in Lake Ridge

Prince William police responded to a domestic incident at Rolling Brook Apartments in Lake Ridge early Friday morning, October 11, 2024.

Few details have been released by police, but a tipster informed Potomac Local that officers were seen using a tactical vehicle at the apartment complex around 1 a.m. The nature of the incident remains unclear.
