The roads in our region are about to get busier ahead of the long Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 27, through Monday, May 30.
Based on the historical traffic data from the Virginia Department of Transportation, periods of moderate to heavy congestion on the most recent pre-pandemic Memorial Day weekends were most likely to occur between noon and 6 p.m. on Friday and Monday and midday on Saturday and Sunday.
The Peyton Society of Virginia, Inc. presented a plaque commemorating an early settler of the area, Valentine Peyton.
The dedication ceremony was held on Saturday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at River Mill Park, 407 Mill Street. The plaque is placed where the upper and lower paths merge at the end of the park.

He made a diving stop and flipped it to Strasburg, covering first for the out. Strasburg threw 62 pitches in his first rehab appearance and will return to Fredericksburg on Sunday for a second rehab start.
The county’s broadcast control room, as well as the equipment located in the room and the cabling in the ceiling, suffered significant water damage Monday, May, during a sprinkler system repair, a county spokesman announced.
Due to the damage to the equipment, the Board meeting will not be broadcast or streamed live due to the damaged equipment. An audio recording of the meeting will be posted on the County’s website on May 25.
Former Occoquan Mayor June Randolph passed away at age 101.
Current Mayor Earnie Porta announced her death in a newsletter to constituents. Randolph served as Town Clerk, Town Treasurer, Town Council member, member of the Architectural Review Board, member and Chair of the Planning Commission, and Town Mayor (1962-1963). In 1989 the town declared April 15 June Randolph Day and made her honorary Town Sargeant with the result that June had then served in every office existing in the Town of Occoquan at that time, said Porta.
The investigation revealed that the victims and other acquaintances, including the accused, had gathered inside the apartment. At one point during the encounter, shots were fired, and both victims were struck, police said.
The two victims were located deceased by officers later that day while investigating a call for service at another apartment.
This organization, known as the Virginia Safe and Healthy Communities Coalition, used the conference held at Shiloh Baptist Church to announce the COVID-19 Mobile Public Health Education Unit launch. The unit will promote vaccine clinics, testing sites, and recommendations made by the Center for Disease Control, such as wearing masks and washing hands statewide.
The coalition’s message will be mainly aimed at African-American communities in the commonwealth who may not have taken the vaccine or any precautions against the coronavirus.
Virginia’s most considerable commuter lot could soon be home to the Washington Commanders Football Team (formerly Redskins).
The Associated Press reports the team purchased 200 acres of land in Woodbridge to house a new stadium, practice facility, amphitheater, shops, and restaurants. A concept map shows the Commander’s facility replacing the Horner Road Commuter Lot, the state’s largest, at Interstate 95 and Prince William Parkway, and the Telegraph Road lot, just across the street.

On Saturday, May 21 at 6:36 p.m., deputies responded to a single vehicle accident on Marchant Drive, near the Gauntlet Golf Course in Stafford County.
The investigation revealed a woman was operating a Can Am Maverick ATV on the street with three passengers.
