“The community-organized carpooling tradition known as slugging will soon expand to one of Fairfax County’s busiest commuting corridors,” FFXnow reported. The I-66 Slugging Network plans a September launch with morning pickups at the Monument Drive garage in Fair Oaks and University Boulevard park and ride in Gainesville, plus drop-offs at Rosslyn, L’Enfant Plaza, Navy Yard, and Metro Center stations, allowing HOV-3 vehicles to use the express lanes toll-free.

Organizers will also run an I-66 Slugging Challenge starting Sept. 14, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, offering incentives and up to $1,000 in prizes to encourage participation as a free, sustainable option amid rising return-to-office commuting along the corridor.

“Scheduled lane closures for road work in the Fredericksburg, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula areas, weather permitting,” the Virginia Department of Transportation reported for the week of July 26 through Aug. 1. Overnight milling and paving will close single and double lanes on I-95 northbound near Exit 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville) in Stafford County, with additional ramp closures and work on Routes 1, 3, 17 and local roads.

Stafford County drivers should expect nighttime single- and double-lane restrictions on I-95 beginning as early as 9 p.m., temporary ramp shutdowns at Exit 143, and alternating or single-lane work on Route 1, Route 610, Route 3 and secondary roads. Motorists are advised to check 511 Virginia for real-time updates and allow extra travel time.

As part of the ongoing Rappahannock Canal Trailway Improvement Project, the Canal Path will be temporarily closed Thursday, July 23, from Washington Avenue to U.S. Route 1, including Higgins Bridge on Dale Street, to allow crews to complete milling and paving after recent vegetation removal, the City of Fredericksburg announced. The work was rescheduled from the previously planned July 30-31 dates, and the detour will follow the same route used in earlier closures, with an extended path to Washington Avenue.

Crews expect to finish Thursday, though weather delays could push the closure into Friday, July 24. The temporary shutdown supports continued improvements aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility along the popular Fredericksburg trail.

Manassas officials will begin a 30-day warning period today at the intersection of Liberia Avenue and Wellington Road as part of the city’s photo red light enforcement program.

Traffic safety studies showed enough violations and crashes at the spot to add cameras there. The warning period runs through Aug. 16, after which active enforcement starts and citations can be issued. A Manassas City Police officer reviews every potential violation before any ticket goes out.

The City of Fredericksburg announced that construction is complete on safety and traffic flow enhancements at two key Route 1 intersections, at Fall Hill Avenue and at Hanson Avenue/Princess Anne Street. Improvements include new crosswalks with pedestrian signals, extended turn lanes, raised medians, and updated traffic signals, with all vehicle lanes now open.

The projects, which began in December 2024, enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians in the historic city along a major Northern Virginia corridor, with final cleanup underway and additional paving planned for 2027.
