“Alternating single and double lane closures at mile markers 107, 108, 110, and 115 for bridge inspections,” the Virginia Department of Transportation stated, referring to overnight work along Interstate 95 between Exit 104 (Carmel Church) and Exit 118 (Thornburg).
The weekly travel alert details multiple daytime and overnight lane closures across Caroline County, the City of Fredericksburg, and Stafford County. Work includes bridge inspections on I-95, maintenance on the Falmouth Bridge, utility work and road widening on Route 1, and guardrail and median improvements along Routes 3, 17, 17 Business, and Centreport Parkway. Most closures occur overnight or during off-peak daytime hours and are weather dependent.
A series of crashes across Interstate 95 and nearby roadways caused severe northbound traffic gridlock in North Stafford and the Quantico area for hours during Thursday evening’s rush hour.
A hit-and-run at a busy Manassas intersection just before New Year’s Eve left several people injured and capped off a month of serious vehicle incidents in the city.
Around 10:30 p.m. on December 30, a silver Hyundai sedan ran a red light at Sudley Road and Stonewall Road, crashing into two vehicles. The occupants of the Hyundai fled before police arrived and are believed to have been picked up by another car. Victims in the struck vehicles were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
The action authorizes VRE to seek approval from its governing commissions to execute a Capital Project Funding Addendum with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority, thereby enabling the project to proceed to planning, environmental review, and design.
The Woodbridge project is part of VRE’s broader effort to prepare stations and infrastructure for longer trains and future rail capacity improvements. Approval of the funding addendum is required for VRE to access state-supplied matching funds under an existing master agreement with VPRA.
According to a press release from the City of Fredericksburg, the changes are part of a broader effort to modernize transit service and improve clarity for riders:
Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FXBGO!) is pleased to announce significant improvements to transit service in Stafford County, with newly realigned and renamed bus routes launching Monday, January 5, 2026.
