“That allows us to expand from a fairly straightforward traditional deck replacement to a full superstructure replacement,” Fredericksburg Free Press reported. “It’s something that would add complexity significantly to the project.”

The Virginia Department of Transportation told Fredericksburg City Council that construction on the 1943 Falmouth Bridge will begin in 2030 and last three years, with the span remaining open but reduced to two southbound lanes and one northbound lane. The $160 million project includes a full superstructure replacement, a 14-foot shared-use path, a six-foot sidewalk, and 11-foot travel lanes.

“VDOT will be suspending many highway work zones and lifting temporary lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia from noon on Wednesday, Nov. 26 until noon on Monday, Dec. 1,” Virginia Department of Transportation announced. “While lane closures will be lifted in most locations, motorists may encounter semi-permanent work zones that remain in place during this time.”

VDOT added that its 511 Virginia tools can help travelers monitor traffic, incidents, weather, and congestion, and that travelers can also view the Thanksgiving travel trends map to identify historically slow periods on the state’s interstates.

Converting one-way streets in downtown Fredericksburg remains on the city’s to-do list, but officials are holding another round of public meetings before making any decisions. Among those weighing in is Joan McGlaughlin, who lives on the southern end of Princess Anne Street and frequently sees drivers struggling to access the train station parking lot.

Fredericksburg’s long-running push to convert major downtown one-way streets to two-way traffic met its fiercest resistance yet Wednesday night, as residents, commissioners, and former elected officials raised sharp questions about safety data, truck deliveries, and whether the $7.7 million proposal actually solves any downtown problem.

“Most of us rely heavily on our phones, which is why Virginians should have access to a safe, secure form of mobile identification on the devices they use all the time,” Secretary of Transportation W. Sheppard Miller III said. “The Virginia Mobile ID option protects your identity and privacy in the digital age, keeping you in control of what information you share.”

“The Commonwealth has long been a leader in innovation and Virginia Mobile ID is the latest example of how we’re modernizing services for residents,” DMV Commissioner Dr. Gerald Lackey stated. “Over the next few months, we’ll continue expanding mobile ID acceptance with partners, while adding new functionality, such as digital wallet integration.”

“The 395 and 95 Express Lanes will reverse early on a number of days leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday,” Express Lanes announced. “On Thanksgiving, the Lanes will run southbound all day long.”

Drivers with three or more people in the car and an E-ZPass Flex set to HOV ON can travel the Express Lanes for free. The early reversals begin Thursday, November 20, and continue through Friday, November 28. Overnight reversals will remain unchanged.
