Virginia community colleges approve tuition hikes

The Center Square: “Tuition is increasing at Virginia community colleges for the first time in five years due to a unanimous decision from the State Board of Community Colleges.”

“Virginia’s 23 community colleges are increasing their tuition by $4.61 per credit hour, about 3% of the previous in-state tuition rate. For most of them, tuition will be $158.61 per credit hour for the 2023-24 school year or $2,379.15 for a 15-credit-hour semester. Other mandatory fees will vary, depending on the college.”

GOP endorses Woodbridge District school board candidate who switched parties

Press release: “Jaylen Custis, a 19-year-old African American candidate for School Board in the Woodbridge District announced today he had switched parties and gained the Prince William County Republican Committee endorsement for School Board.”

“Earlier this year, Custis spoke unknowingly to a conservative women’s group and because of his actions, was told by Democrats he could not even seek the Democratic nomination.

Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety: “REACH Homeschool in Fredericksburg was among the 21 award winners recognized during the annual Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO) Awards Banquet held Saturday night, July 15, at James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg”

“REACH Homeschool was presented two awards for their efforts to prevent teen driver-related crashes, fatalities, and injuries. A student from REACH and the YOVASO club sponsor, were also recognized for their ongoing support of YOVASO and youth traffic safety initiatives.”

Manassas schools finalize plans for Jennie Dean replacement

Insidenova.com: “Manassas City Public Schools have settled on a design for the new Jennie Dean Elementary School, with plans to break ground at the start of 2025.”

“On Tuesday, School Board Chair Suzanne Seaberg announced that the division had selected Arlington-based RRMM Architects for the project. The company will use a prototype design used for Hardy Elementary School in Smithfield.”

Virginia Department of Education ‘restores parental rights’

“The guidance, Model Policies on Ensuring Privacy, Dignity and Respect for All Students and Parents in Virginia’s Public Schools, provides clearer input for school boards regarding the role of parents in decisions relating to their child’s gender identity, as well as restricting transgender students from participating in sex segregated extra-curricular activities that don’t align with their biological sex.”

“In addition, the new directive requires students to use bathrooms or locker rooms that correspond with their biological sex; while recognizing federal law may override such policy, it provides parents the right to opt their children out from using those facilities and must provide private, alternative facilities.”

Stafford Schools earns American Heart Association’s Heart of Gold award

Stafford Schools: “The American Heart Association presented Stafford County Public Schools with the Heart of Gold School District award for its participation in the school-based Kids Heart Challenge program. The division is the largest in Virginia with 100 percent participation in the program.”

“I am so proud to partner with the American Heart Association and help lead the state in offering lifesaving programs to every student and every family in our community,” said Dr. Thomas W. Taylor, Stafford Schools Superintendent. The Kids Heart Challenge & American Heart Challenge programs provide instruction in the Warning Signs of Stroke and the Steps to Hands-Only CPR; two critical skills that absolutely save lives.”

“Congratulations to the following PWCS students: Khailah Schroeter, senior at Osbourn Park High School, won best Comic Actor in a Female Role in a Musical for her role of Karen Smith in the school presentation of ‘Mean Girls High School Version’.”

Occoquan Elementary students win Michael & Sons jingle contest

Prince William County Public Schools: “Third-grade students at Occoquan Elementary School took home a big prize in the Michael & Sons jingle contest.”

“This annual competition is open to students from Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and Washington D.C. This year, there were almost 50 elementary schools that entered. Judging was based off social media engagement – likes, shares, and comments, with each one counting as one vote.”
