The week of June 17 is National Waste and Recycling Workers Week, formerly known as Garbage Man Day.
Annually, communities across the nation are encouraged to take a moment during this special week and show appreciation for the men and women in the solid waste management industry.
Man, 22 killed in crash in Nokesville
Fatal Crash Investigation — On May 26 at 7:35 p.m., investigators with the Crash Investigation Unit responded to the 13300 block of Bristow Rd. in Nokesville (20181) to investigate a crash. The investigation revealed that the driver of 2005 Subaru WRX was traveling northbound on Bristow Rd. when the vehicle crossed over the center line and struck a 2013 Nissan Leaf traveling the opposite direction. The driver of the Subaru was extricated from the vehicle and transported to an area hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries sustained during the crash. The driver of the Nissan was also transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Speed is a factor in the crash. The driver of the Subaru was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The investigation continues.
Just days before the unofficial start to summer, Prince William County announced it will open its government-run swimming pools this year after shuttering them last year due to the pandemic.
The county plans to reopen both of its waterparks, and at least four of its outdoor pools, located in the eastern section of the county.
Prince William County Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism announced the creation of a new Public Safety Cyclists Unit.
Supervisor Yesli Vega will hold a virtual town hall meeting tonight on the ability of Prince William County employees to negotiate their contracts.
A new Virginia law that went into effect May 1 allows local government employees to enter into collective bargaining agreements. Before, such agreements and attempts to unionize were prohibited.
Suspicious Event — On May 24, 2021, at approximately 1:38 p.m. officers from the Manassas City Police Department responded to the 9300 block of Prescott Ave. for a suspicious event. The reporting party stated that she retrieved her mail from the mailbox, and located an envelope with the words “Open please anthrax inside” written on the outside. Upon further investigation, officers learned that this was not a credible threat, and that the envelope contained a thank you note card. There is currently no threat to the community. The investigation is ongoing.
Hit and Run — On May 24, 2021, at approximately 9:03 p.m. officers from the Manassas City Police Department responded to the 8600 block of Mathis Ave. for a hit and run. Officers located an abandoned black Nissan Pathfinder with no tags. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the black Nissan Pathfinder had driven over the curve, and hit a parked white box truck. The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival. The first day of school is August 23, 2021. All students will attend school five days a week Monday-Friday.
The Kuma Foundation’s Founder and Chairman of the Board, Ray Kimble, presented a $1,000 check to Chad Wray, Principal of Victory Elementary School, to be used for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) enrichment on Friday.
The Kuma Foundation committed to giving 10% of all proceeds from their Annual “Full STEAM Ahead” Fun Run to the school with the most participation. Victory Elementary School was the winner.
