Prince William schools drop most COVID-19 protocols for the new school year (paywall) — Prince William County schools will begin the new year like it’s 2019. The school division will no longer post COVID-19 case numbers on its website; gone too will be mask requirements, social distancing and contact tracing. [Prince William Times]

New Route 28 intersections proposed in Manassas Park — The city is asking for over $18 million in Smart Scale funding from the Commonwealth Transportation Board for intersection changes from Manassas Drive to Spruce Street along Route 28. [Insidenova.com]

A man who trespassed outside a McDonald’s hit a Prince William police officer, police said.

Police observed a man at the restaurant at 10730 Balls Ford Road near Manassas at 10:56 a.m. Wednesday, August 17. Officers approached him, determined he was trespassing at the business and tried to arrest him.

Student SOL scores improve but will take years to return to 2019 levels

Parents filled the seats at a Prince William County School Board meeting on September 1, 2021 to protest proposed changes to citizen public comments at meetings, and the school division's forced masking policy for children.

The Virginia Department of Education released new Standards of Learning data today.

The SOL tests measure student math, science, reading, and writing performance.

The state’s second-largest public school division, Prince William County, rolled back most of its coronavirus mitigation strategies.

When school starts Monday, August 22, schools will look and feel like the pandemic never happened, with a lack of masking, social distancing, and contract tracing requirements that were common last year.

Senator McPike doubles down on Commanders: ‘Snyder has a lot to answer’

Prince William County State Senator Jeremy McPike (D-29) says the Washington Commanders have a lot to work out if it wants to bring a football stadium to Woodbridge.

McPike said the team has no plans to mitigate the traffic effects drivers on Interstate 95 would feel if a new stadium were to be built at the Horner Road Commuter Lot, the state’s largest, just off Prince William Parkway.

Sleeping chef led to apartment fire, 11 displaced from 4 homes, officials said

At 4:43 a.m., units were dispatched to the 13000 blk of Tanazari Way to find a kitchen fire extinguished by the building’s automatic sprinkler system. The apartment’s occupant was cooking food on the stove but fell asleep.

Smoke detectors activated and alerted the occupant. The occupant sustained a minor injury attempting to remove the food from the stove. No other injuries were reported.

Tonight, Thursday, August 18, it will be 90s night at the Prince William County Fair, and country music artist Tracy Byrd, known for songs like “10 Rounds with Jose Cuervo” and “Watermelon Crawl,” will perform live at the grandstand.

Tickets are $35 to $40, are limited, and are on sale on the fair’s website.

Stafford wants Fredericksburg bypass study, ousts transportation committee chairman

Scharpenberg’s removal came following a closed-session meeting on Tuesday, August 16, and comes after he pitched a proposal of an outer connector road bypassing Fredericksburg that would cut through a swath of the county.

Aquia District Supervisor Monica Gary threatened to remove Sharpenberg if he pursued the bypass proposal, which is not included in long-range transportation plans. Scharfenberg refused to step down, causing friction between him and the Stafford County Board of Supervisors.
