Virginia is home to two history-making leaders who are not waiting for change; they are driving it. US Representative Jennifer McClellan, the first Black woman to represent Virginia in Congress, brings nearly two decades of results to the table: more than 370 pieces of legislation passed, voting rights expanded, reproductive healthcare protected, and clean energy advanced. She does not govern on noise. She governs on outcomes!
Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi, the first Muslim woman elected to statewide office in the United States, built her leadership in Virginia’s classrooms before taking it to the statehouse. Steady, focused, and purpose-driven, she does not just represent change; she expands what leadership looks like.
Wednesday, June 22, marked the 50th anniversary of the devastation caused by Hurricane Agnes.
The storm caused massive damage across the region, including washing out a bridge that carried Route 1 over the Occoquan River in Woodbridge and the iron Pratt truss bridge that carried Route 123 over the Occoquan River. The Town of Occoquan is planning an extended commemoration of Agnes during our Discover Occoquan week in August. Among the week’s planned activities is the dedication of a memorial that incorporates part of the truss bridge destroyed by the floodwaters.
Jeremy De La Rosa homered and the FredNat bullpen pitched four shutout innings, but the Salem Red Sox held on for a 5-4 win over the FredNats on Wednesday night in Salem. However, due to Carolina’s loss to Down East, the FredNats are still alive for a first-half championship.
The Red Sox scored first in the 2nd inning on a two-run home run from Tyler Miller and an RBI double from Brainer Bonaci. The FredNats answered right back in the top of the 3rd on a two-run home run from De La Rosa off the top of the wall in left field. It was De La Rosa’s 7th of the year, and the lead was cut to 3-2.
