The Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department has a new member. Lincoln, an ignitable liquid detection canine, is now on active duty.

Lincoln is a two-and-a-half-year-old yellow lab partnered with Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Pappas. The team just completed a month of training in New Hampshire to become certified. The dogs help law enforcement collect evidence that may be used to prosecute an arsonist.

Many of those sitting in traffic on Interstate 95 or Route 1 rarely think about how close they are to the expansive Potomac River, the region’s first superhighway during colonial times.

But tourism officials in Fairfax County want to change that. They announced a new branding initiative for the southern portion of the county at an event at George Washington’s Mount Vernon home on Wednesday, May 18.


Battalion Chief Kim Stewart has recently completed the Executive Fire Officer Program offered by the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Academy.

The four-year program is the flagship leadership program of the U.S. Fire Administration and National Fire Academy, designed to provide fire officers with a broad perspective on various facets of fire and emergency services administration.


In western Prince William County tomorrow, Vint Hill Road (Route 215) between Greenwich Road (Route 603) and Burwell Road (Route 604) will be closed, weather permitting, from 9 p.m. Friday, May 20 to 7 a.m. Saturday, May 21 to replace a culvert pipe, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Traffic will be detoured via Greenwich Road, Kennedy Road/Fitzwater Drive (Route 652), and Burwell Road back to Vint Hill Road. Drivers are asked to follow posted detour signs.


Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center awarded grants of more than $375,000 to programs, foundations, and groups within the community.

In all, 10 organizations focusing on the health and wellness of area residents were honored.

Jacob Young reached four times and Andrew Alvarez turned in another dominant relief appearance, but the FredNats fell in the second game in Delmarva 5-3 Wednesday.

The FredNats fell behind 3-0 in the second on a pair of two-out Shorebird hits vs. Fredericksburg starter Bryan Caceres (3-2). He allowed five runs (five earned) in five innings but also struck out seven without allowing a walk.
