Updated November 10, 2022 — VDOT says it will activate new temporary traffic signals at Interstate 95 and Route 17 near Fredericksburg later than expected.

The signals will now be activated in a flash on Tuesday, Nov. 29, and will go into full-color operation on Thursday, Dec. 1. Earlier this week, VDOT said drivers would see the lights flashing as early as next week.


The warning bells started ringing last spring that inflation is driving up the cost of needed road construction in Stafford County. Today, elected officials are stunned by the rising costs, which have soared to more than double the original cost estimates.

Attendees learned about alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) technology from the Virginia Clean Cities (VCC) project team and from AFV industry experts ABM, Sonny Merryman Inc., Roush CleanTech, and Blue Bird.

The Drive Clean Rural USA project is a step for the city as it diligently works to achieve the City Council’s goal of powering municipal operations with 100% renewable energy by 2035. As a part of this project and workshop, all three entities undergo a fleet assessment to establish a baseline for fleet operations. By participating in this effort, the city aims to plan and identify opportunities to transition to a clean fuel-powered fleet city-wide.


Continued reconstruction and paving of the permanent ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 South will require closure of the ramp during daytime hours today, Saturday, November 5; Wednesday, November 9; and Thursday, November 10.

The ramp will also be closed for an extended overnight period on Sunday, November 6, beginning at 8 p.m. until noon the following day. This work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Stafford County continues to supplement the transportation work planned by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). While VDOT bears the responsibility for the majority of Virginia roads, Stafford has taken a bigger role in assisting with traffic problems in the county in recent years.

Stafford is beginning the process of creating its first Transportation Master Plan to guide future county transportation projects and investment decisions to improve county roads. Stafford seeks the community’s input to decide which projects to plan and build in the coming years and invites the public to take the transportation survey.


The scenic Nathaniel Ellicott footbridge over the Occoquan River got a bit of a facelift this week. The bridge links the town in Prince Willaim County to the Vulcan rock quarry in Fairfax County. A spillway makes for a serene waterfall near the bridge. Before Hurricane Agnes in 1972, the bridge carried traffic on Route 123 over the river. The storm washed away the bridge, and a new one was built.
