(The Center Square) – A commission of Virginia state lawmakers voted Monday to file an objection to the Virginia Department of Education’s proposed 2022 model policy for schools, which outlines new rules for how schools handle a student’s gender identity that have been labeled anti-trans by opponents.

Police arrested an Alexandria man accused of assaulting a police officer during a shoplifting case at a Walmart in July.

On July 11 at 9:29 a.m., officers responded to Walmart to investigate a shoplifter. Before officers arrived at the store, store security personnel detained a man, later identified as the accused, who was observed putting items into a backpack before walking towards the exit, where he encountered security personnel.

Willie Deutsch will run to reclaim the Coles District seat on the Prince William County School Board.

Deutsch, 33, posted a video to Facebook to announce his campaign. In it, the Republican cited a widening achievement gap in the state’s second-largest school division, which has been growing since the lockdowns of the 2020 pandemic.

Stafford County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor will meet with residents for his first “Listen and Learn” session of 2023.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held Tuesday, January 17, at Hartwood Elementary School, 14 Shackleford Road, in Hartwood. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
