STAFFORD, Va. – Virginia State Police are investigating a serious three-vehicle crash that shut down local northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the Rappahannock River Bridge on Saturday night.

The crash happened at 8:25 p.m. on May 17 at mile marker 132, just north of Fredericksburg. According to police, a 2007 Mazda Speed 3 was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver attempted to squeeze between two vehicles—a Hyundai Palisade in the left lane and an unknown vehicle in the middle lane. The Mazda collided with the Hyundai, causing it to flip onto the guardrail.

The driver of the Mazda, 23-year-old Joseph T. Celich of Stafford, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. As he lay in the roadway, a 2017 Nissan Sentra traveling northbound struck him and then collided with the wrecked Mazda. Celich was transported to Mary Washington Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A 24-year-old female passenger in the Mazda, also not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was also taken to Mary Washington Hospital.

The Hyundai’s driver, a 42-year-old man from Alexandria, and his four passengers—including three children—suffered minor injuries and were all transported to the hospital. Police said everyone in the Hyundai was properly restrained.

The 17-year-old male driver of the Nissan was not injured and had been wearing a seatbelt.

Virginia State Police say charges are pending as the investigation continues.

A fiery crash on Interstate 95 southbound on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, caused significant delays overnight and into the early morning hours.

According to Virginia State Police spokesman Matthew Demlein, the crash occurred at approximately 12:17 a.m. at the 150-mile marker at Dumfries when a Honda SUV traveling in the right lane slowed and was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer.

The impact of the collision caused a fire to engulf the tractor-trailer, which led to emergency response teams shutting down multiple lanes for several hours.

The driver of the Honda SUV suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.

Authorities worked through the night to clear the wreckage and assess the damage. Traffic backups stretched for miles as crews battled the flames and removed debris from the scene.

A speeding incident escalated into a high-speed pursuit Wednesday, January 21, 2025, on Interstate 95, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Matthew Demlein.

At 11:33 a.m., a Virginia State Police trooper attempted to stop a silver sedan traveling northbound on I-95 near the 157-mile marker in Prince William County for speeding—clocked at 93 mph in a 60-mph zone. The driver refused to stop, prompting a police pursuit.

During the chase, the sedan struck the mirror of another vehicle, causing minor damage, but no injuries were reported. The pursuit continued onto eastbound Interstate 495 and ultimately ended at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, marking the Maryland state line. At that point, the pursuit was terminated.

Virginia State Police have not released additional details about the driver or whether charges are pending.
