Casper “Cap” Ray Whetzel of Midland, VA, formerly of Brentsville, VA passed away January 11, 2023 in Fauquier County. Born November 17, 1935 in Brentsville to Jesse James Whetzel and Tracie Irene Spitzer Whetzel.
Cap worked in grocery stores and was also a superintendent for Prince William schools.
Prince William County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. LaTayna McDade issued a statement after administrators at Battlefield, Colgan, Forest Park, and Patriots failed to tell 28 students they received letters of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program.
While the students do not qualify for the scholarship, many students use the commendation letters on college applications. The school division said it learned about the error on Tuesday, January 16 when the original number of county high school students believed to have not been notified was 16.
A film festvial at Porter Library at North Stafford will celebrate the county’s spot on the of fame.
The Stafford County Museum organization will host the festival in the community Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the library, 2001 Parkway Boulevard, from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

(The Center Square) – A bill that would increase the standard tax deduction for both individual and joint filers, and lower Virginia’s top personal income tax rate was passed along party lines by a committee of lawmakers Wednesday.
Manassas fire and rescue crews were dispatched to the 8500 block of Jayhawk Terrace for a structure fire. Initial reports were for a smell of smoke and a smoke detector sounding somewhere in a neighboring apartment.
Fire and rescue personnel began evacuating the building.
Kiley Edward “Jack” Cornwell, Jr., 81, of High View, WV, entered his heavenly home on January 11, 2023.
e was born on June 27, 1941, in Nokesville, VA, to Kiley E. Cornwell and Martha A. Cornwell. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marlene Virginia (Friend) Cornwell, as well as three sons: Stephen E. Cornwell and his wife, Christie, of Stephens City, VA; Gregory K. Cornwell and his wife, Renee, of Winston-Salem, NC; and Timothy S. Cornwell, and his wife, Sarah, of Barcelona, Spain. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Madison, Morgan, Mackenzie, Conner (wife-Natalie), Kaitlyn, Abigail, Alexandra, Grant, and Denton Cornwell. Surviving siblings are Mildred Davis, Luther Cornwell, David Cornwell and Donald Cornwell.

(The Center Square) – A bill backed by Virginia Republican lawmakers to create “Education Success Accounts” to help parents pay for education expenses – including private school tuition – sparked debate among lawmakers Tuesday before clearing its first hurdle in a House of Delegates subcommittee.
A new Chick-fil-A restaurant in North Stafford will be one of the chain’s most extensive and updated models.
The restaurant will feature a dining room, a kitchen in the center, and a larger meal preparation area. Outside, drivers can use two of three lanes to pick up food from a window.
