Freezing rain possible Monday, snow showers later in week

Drivers can expect some freezing rain in the area tonight.

The rain is expected to freeze on contact with the surface after 3 a.m. as temperatures drop below freezing. This could cause some light ice build up across the region and could hamper the Monday morning commute in some areas. There is a higher likelihood drivers will see more ice the further they travel west of Interstate 95.

The freezing rain could last through 9 a.m., and then the precipitation should a changeover to all rain, according to the National Weather Service. Monday’s high temperatures are expected to reach well above freezing into the low 40s.

The rain will affect the area all day Monday and into the evening hours. Temperatures Monday night will once again drop below freezing, down to 28 degrees, according to the weather service.

This latest round of winter weather is expected after a series of snow storms and frigid cold temperatures wreaked havoc on school schedules last week. Prince William County Public Schools opened on time as the snow fell across the county on Tuesday. That caused buses to be delayed and students to get to school late.

As the week continued, several school systems began the school days 2-hours behind regular schedule due to cold temperatures.

The Weather for the rest of week could bring more snow to our area. There’s a chance of snow showers late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. High temperatures should hover at freezing or below on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the weather service.
