MANASSAS, Va. — Officials in Manassas are in the process of certifying their police department, and they want to hear from residents during an open comment period on Tuesday.
Manassas police is seeking certification from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The department was first certified by the organization in 1998, and this marks the fifth time the agency has sought re-certification.

CALEA is seeking public comment to help verify that the Police Department meets professional standards for law enforcement in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
As part of an on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments by calling (703) 392-1464 on Tuesday August 6, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Callers will speak directly with the assessment team.
The public information session will be held at City Hall (9027 Center St.) in the Council Chambers starting at 5:00pm on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Comments must address the Department’s ability to comply with the Commission’s standards. A copy of the standards is available through the Department’s Accreditation Manager, Lieutenant J.P. Bisek, who may be reached at (703) 257-8020.
Telephone comments, as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 5 minutes.
