Volunteer Opportunities: Health Center Has Urgent Need

 ·         The Greater Prince William Community Health Center is celebrating National Health Center Week on August 13-15 from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. each day.  We have an urgent need for volunteers every day to assist with free health screenings such as mammograms, checks for cholesterol, anemia, diabetes, heart disease, depression, vision and dental to name just a few.  The event will include free car seats, lunch, and music and fun children’s entertainment. So as you can see, your volunteer effort will make a huge impact on thousands of individuals participating in this super event. Please visit: GPWhealthcenter.org for more info or call Richard at (703) 670-8858 to volunteer.  There will also be a volunteer orientation on Friday August 9 at 1 p.m. to give you all the specifics to jump right in and help.  Teens age 17 and older are very welcome and of course you do not need a health background to be part of this wonderful community event.

·         Habitat for Humanity is seeking a sign language interpreter to help with a new applicant who has critical home repairs.  The applicant is deaf and disabled.  Come help the Habitat folks help this family with immediate needs.  They would also like to form a bank of interpreters for future reference.  Please call Tiffanie at (703) 369-6708 to learn more.

·         Hendrick Honda in Woodbridge has the final push for their Annual Fill a Backpack program to help kids at Potomac View Elementary start the new school year with all supplies necessary to be successful in school.  You can drop off backpacks with age appropriate supplies such as wipes, glue sticks, crayons, pencils, notebooks and other fun things at Hendrick Honda and they will give you a voucher for a $19.95 oil change.  It’s a win-win for all.  Please check out their website at: hendrickauto.com for more info.

·         Historic Manassas is gearing up for the Manassas Civil War weekend August 23-25. Volunteers are needed to assist with the bourbon tasting August 24 5:30-9 p.m. Sounds like fun.  Volunteer marshals are needed for the parade on August 24 from 10-11 a.m.  Please call Sarah at (703) 361-6599 ext 102 for these jobs.  And lastly The Manassas Museum needs volunteers at the Liberia Plantation to help visitors on both August 23 and 24.  The morning shift is 9 a.m.-1:30 and the afternoon shift is 1:30-6 p.m.  Please call Doug at (703) 257-8265 for these opportunities.

·         Please visit Romano’s Macaroni Grill in Woodbridge on Thursday August 15 to support the Bill Mehr Drop-in Center for the Homeless. Proceeds from each check will go to this wonderful organization.

·         Prince William County Landfill can take your old electronics every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. as well as the Balls Ford Compost Facility every secopnd Saturday on the month from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.  Residents may bring up to 3 items per visit.  Please dispose of your old electronics responsibly.

·         The Prince William SPCA is looking for a volunteer to do their monthly newsletter. There is a planning committee to help.  Please complete a volunteer sign up form on their website at PWSPCA.org.

·         NVFS Pharmacy Central Program is looking for a volunteer to help scan client files on 2 consecutive weekdays for about 3 hrs each day.  Volunteers must be 18 yrs and complete a background check.  Please call Jan to learn more at (571) 748-2621.

·         BARN is looking for a volunteer to drive their 10 ft box truck from Bristow to Woodbridge twice a month.  You need a goof driving record and a background check will be performed.  Please call Becky at (703) 369-1325 to learn more.

·         ACTS Senior Link is gearing up for their next volunteer training on August 17th.  This wonderful program matches volunteers who call isolated seniors to check up on them and to be a link to other services in the community.  Please call (703) 441-1144 to register for the training.

·         BEACON Adult Literacy Program needs volunteers in the Manassas area to teach ESL, adult basic Ed, citizenship and conversation. Classes are Monday through Friday mornings and evenings. Prior experience is not needed as the free training will give you all the skills needed to be successful.  Volunteers may teach either mornings or evenings once or twice a week.  Enjoy your summer and start in the fall.   Please call Caroline at (703) 368-7491 to learn more.

·         The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) needs senior volunteers age 55 and older to provide transportation for a veteran to get to their local doctor’s appt. All vets are referred to us by Aging and you’ll have lots of advance notice for their appts.  It’s also not too early to sign up to tutor kids in grades K-3 in reading and math next school year.  Please call Coleen at (703) 369-5292 ext. 207 for more info.

·         Please mark your calendars for the Alzheimer’s Association Walk on Saturday October 19 in Old Town Manassas.  Volunteers are needed for set-up, staffing tables, handing out literature and monitoring the route.  Please call Sonya at (703) 766-9025 to learn more.
