Here’s more in an edited press release from Virginia State Police:
Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on July 14, 2013, in Stafford County. At 6:49 p.m., on Sunday, Virginia State Police were notified of a multiple-vehicle crash that occurred on U.S. 17 approximately one mile north of Rt. 634 (Hemp Road). The crash involved six vehicles.
A 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling northbound on U.S. 17. It first sideswiped a northbound 2008 Honda sedan that was in the right lane on U.S. 17. Then the pickup sideswiped a 2003 Honda minivan, also in the right northbound lane of U.S. 17. The pickup continued north and sideswiped a 1990 Volvo station wagon that was in the left northbound lane on U.S. 17. The pickup truck then ran off the right side of U.S. 17 and struck a tree.
The impact of the crash between the pickup and the Volvo forced the Volvo station wagon to run off the left side of the road. The Volvo continued through the median and overturned in the southbound lanes of U.S. 17. The Volvo’s driver was ejected and struck by a 1996 Ford F-350 pickup truck, which was traveling south on U.S. 17. A 2004 Ford pickup that was also traveling in the southbound lanes of U.S. 17 suffered minor damage from debris from the previous crash.
The driver of the Volvo, Sue Ann Collins, 50 of Sumerduck, Va., died at the scene. Her 8-year-old female passenger was transported to Mary Washington Hospital.
The 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck driver, Myron L. Vaughn, 49, of Stafford, was transported to Mary Washington Hospital.
None of the occupants of the other four vehicles was injured in the crash.
The crash is being investigated by Senior Trooper R. G. Hindenlang. The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation, which is still ongoing. Charges are pending at this time.
