From the scene: Oxygen truck overturns closing Route 234 for hours Friday afternoon

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — A sedan collided with a truck carrying oxygen about 2 p.m. causing the truck to overturn and a major road closure.

It happened at the intersection of Route 234 and Pinnacle Ridge Drive, south of Lake Jackson and north of Purcell Road in Prince William County.

The driver of the sedan suffered minor injuries, police said.

A HAZMAT team was called to the crash scene, however, no leaks were reported. The truck was carrying nitrogen which is not hazardous even if it had been leaking, one fire and rescue official on the scene told me.

The four-lane highway was closed at Pinnacle Ridge Drive for the rescue response and clean up. Police turned around drivers around before reaching they reached crash scene.

Firefighters worked diligently to remove air tanks from the overturned truck.

Route 234 southbound was reopened to traffic at 4 p.m. while the northbound portion remained closed.

Drivers took to Purcell and Hoadly roads to get around the crash scene. Traffic volumes on Prince William Parkway were heavier than normal as drivers made the trip from Woodbridge to Manassas.
