The Virginia Department of Transportation is inviting public comment on a proposed $14.3 million project to improve safety and traffic operations at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 624 (Layhill Road) in Stafford County.

An in-person design public hearing in open-house format is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Falmouth Elementary School, 1000 Forbes Street, Fredericksburg. A backup date of Wednesday, Nov. 4, is listed if needed. Project materials will be posted on the project page the day of the meeting.

Comments will be accepted at the hearing and afterward through Saturday, Nov. 7. They may be submitted via an online survey, emailed to [email protected] (reference “Route 1 and Layhill Road” in the subject line), or mailed to Jessica Graves, Project Manager, VDOT, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405.

Proposed improvements include dual right-turn lanes and a single left-turn lane on Layhill Road onto Route 1; a new connector roadway linking Layhill Road with Heritage Commons Drive behind the Valero gas station; extended turn lanes and a raised median on Route 1; and new pedestrian facilities, including a 10-foot shared-use path and 5-foot sidewalks. The project is funded through Virginia’s SMART SCALE program and would be advertised for construction in November 2029. About 25,000 vehicles a day travel through the intersection.
