Tin Cannon Brewing Company Announces Closure After a Decade in Business

After more than ten years of bringing craft beer and community together, Tin Cannon Brewing Company is closing its doors. The announcement was made by co-founders John Hilkert and Aaron Ludwig, who shared a heartfelt message with their patrons, reflecting on their journey as small business owners and their decision to move on to new adventures.

“Tin Cannon Brewing Company has had the pleasure of bringing a large part of the community together for over ten years,” the owners stated. “We have met so many wonderful people, formed amazing friendships, made a difference through important fundraisers, and created a ‘Cheers’ taproom atmosphere with our friendly staff, delicious beers, and fun events.”

The brewery, known for its themed taproom events including trivia, bingo, beer triathlons, chili cook-offs, and live music, will host a final farewell party on March 15. The doors will remain open until the beer supply runs out, with all sales concluding on March 31.

While the closure comes with sadness, Hilkert and Ludwig also expressed excitement for the next phase of their lives, in a statement posted to Facebook. “The time needed to keep our small business going has also sometimes prevented us from being able to decompress and get rejuvenated. We have missed spending quality time with family, going on vacations, pursuing hobbies, etc.,” they shared. “Over the last several months, we have mulled over what to do, and we decided that once the timing was right, we were going to shut down and move on. That time has come.”

A Legacy as Prince William County’s First Nanobrewery

Tin Cannon Brewing Company first made headlines in 2015 when it opened as the first nanobrewery in Prince William County and Manassas. At the time, the region was experiencing a boom in craft brewing, and Tin Cannon stood out as a pioneering force in the industry.

A nanobrewery, which typically produces beer in batches of three barrels or less, allows for small-scale experimentation and unique flavors. This approach enabled Tin Cannon to introduce a diverse selection of craft beers, each with a distinct personality that resonated with the community. In an interview with Potomac Local News in 2015, the owners emphasized their commitment to creativity and quality, noting that their mission was to craft beers that reflected their passion for the industry.

From the start, Tin Cannon was more than just a place to drink beer; it was a gathering spot where locals could unwind, connect, and participate in engaging events. Over the years, the brewery hosted countless fundraisers, supporting local charities and initiatives, and became a staple of the Gainesville social scene.

A Final Toast

As the Gainesville community prepares to bid farewell to this beloved establishment, Tin Cannon Brewing Company’s legacy remains. Its impact on the local craft beer scene and the friendships forged within its walls will not be forgotten.

“We hope you will wish us well and help us say a proper goodbye to our awesome little brewery by coming to visit between now and our last day,” Hilkert and Ludwig said in their announcement. “We also hope all of you who have formed friendships with us will stay in touch.”
