Nigerian couple opens Sabejo International Market in Manassas

The Sudley Road commercial corridor gained more international flair this fall as Sabejo International Market opened in the Canterbury Village Shopping Center.

Sabejo (pronounced Sa-Bay-Joe) took over and renovated a 2,000-square-foot retail space selling groceries, food, toiletries, and other convenience goods.

Sabejo International Market is owned by serial entrepreneurs Maria and John Anwanwan, who are starting their first U.S.-based business. Born in Nigeria, Maria operated several small businesses before immigrating to the U.S. and the Manassas area where she and her husband, John, have raised their children Samuel, Benjamin, and Jo Anne (Sabejo Market’s namesakes). After several years working in big box stores before becoming a certified nursing assistant, Maria is returning to her entrepreneurial ways in Manassas.

“I’ve always had a passion for retail,” said Maria. “Finding a storefront close to my home and in the community, I live in has been key to helping fulfill my dreams of opening my own business here. I’m thrilled to be in Manassas.”

Sabejo International Market is one of a recent string of new lease activity in the Canterbury Village Shopping Center, at 8637 Sudley Road, including Tang’s Bridal doubling their footprint and Dollar General’s subleasing the 14,400 square foot former Walgreens building.
